Budget Title: Instructional Support Specialist (SL-4)

Salary: $64,474 - $73,000

The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is seeking an organized, detail-oriented Laboratory Manager to oversee our research laboratories. This role requires a scientific background and hands-on laboratory experience. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic research environment, possess multitasking skills, and be capable of working effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing of a variety of laboratory instruments, including microscopes, imagers, plate readers, flow cytometers, speedvac, confocal microscope, water purification systems, autoclaves, and mass spectrometers. This oversight will include:
    • Training users in proper instrument use
    • Developing SOP's and maintenance checklists for key instruments
    • Assisting with experimental design / interpretation as appropriate
    • Overseeing the maintenance and repair of major equipment
    • Managing service contracts and coordinating repair visits
  • Working with Facilities Management and external vendors to coordinate maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to laboratory infrastructure (e.g., electrical systems, fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, etc.).
  • Performing basic hands-on troubleshooting and submitting work orders.
  • Managing laboratory access requirements and maintaining up-to-date records of all research staff and volunteers.
  • Partnering with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) to ensure safety compliance and training appropriate across all Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research and Development building labs.
  • Assisting faculty with IACUC submissions and animal handling protocols.
  • Assisting with procurement, particularly for new faculty, departmental purchases, and major equipment purchases, including generating purchase orders and obtaining quotes.
  • Managing the chargeback system for departmental equipment, maintaining chargeback accounts, tracking chargeback expenses and invoice and billing management.
  • Assisting with new faculty orientation, including training on university financial policies, P-card reconciliations, purchasing, and safety protocols.
  • Supporting the Compounding and MS Graduate Labs with class setup, student support, and supply ordering.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Effective Interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills

Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree (or higher) in a scientific discipline
  • At least three years' experience working in a laboratory setting
  • Scientific background

Preferred:

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and working with complex spreadsheets
