The primary function of the position is to serve as a professional advisor assisting, providing instructions, training, or answering questions regarding work procedures and directives as it relates to the installation, repairs, maintenance of machinery located in the kitchen, canteen, industrial laundry including tunnel washers and dryers, conveyor systems, air compressors, engine and hydromantic dynamometers, etc. including oversight and coordination of the operations efforts of contractors.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Supervises work primarily at the main Biloxi campus of the VA Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System, but may be required from time to time to travel tot he outpatient clinics located in Mobile, AL, Pensacola, Eglin, and/or Panama City Beach, FL to conduct and/or supervise random maintenance repair or emergency repairs.

Electronics workers frequently lift and carry, unassisted, items weighing up to 45 pounds. They are sometimes required to lift and carry items weighing more than 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping. Climbing and working in high places may be required. Some work may require the aid of magnifying lenses, eye loops, and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components.

The working conditions during normal time and overtime hours will be in uncontrolled environments from ladders, rooftops and confined spaces and scaffolding. Occasionally, he/she will be subject to very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous working conditions, exposure to hazards and various types of infections normally encountered in hospitals or other medical facility builds.

Responsibilities:

  • Receives and establishes work schedule and plans to accomplish mission of performing recurring and non-recurring maintenance and repair, and preventive maintenance on all equipment and systems assigned to the General Mechanic Shops.
  • Establishes deadlines and priorities based on general work schedules, methods, and policies.
  • Recognized as the subject matter expert and stays abreast on state-of-the-art technologies of laundry and kitchen equipment and of new and emerging of the market technologies.
  • Continually evaluates and improves operational effectiveness by studying the work structure and methods, examines various alternatives and recommends changes.
  • Attends meetings in making long- and short-range plans for operation and repair of equipment.
  • Ensures that work supplies, tools, plans, equipment, and any other materials necessary for the satisfactory completion of assignments are present and/or ordered.
  • Instructs and ensures workers use shop equipment safely and properly.
  • Be alert to detect and correct any unsafe conditions.
  • Independently directs the work of journeymen Electronic Mechanics, Industrial Equipment Mechanics, Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanics, and Laundry Equipment Mechanics.
  • Promotes customer satisfaction with quality and timely work.
  • Provides supervision, training, and guidance on repair of all equipment.
  • Possess knowledge and practical skills in assembly disassembly, troubleshooting, repair and/or maintenance and proper operation on equipment (such as ceiling lifts, dishwashers, tunnel dryers, automatic spread feeders, dental and vacuum pumps, medical air compressors, food carts, generators and heavy equipment).
  • Provides technical guidance and monitoring using blueprints, sketches, diagrams, pamphlets, technical orders, bulletins, and other oral and written directives.
  • Responsible for ordering supplies, materials, equipment, and tools necessary to accomplish required work.
  • Must adhere to fire, safety, and security requirements.
  • Participate in the interviewing of job applicants, recommends of selection of new hires for shop, orients new employees, position descriptions, performance standards, safety practices, shop policy and leave policies.
  • Monitor progress of probationary employees and makes recommendations on retention or termination.
  • Observes work performance and plans and administers on-the-job training.
  • Responsible for initiating disciplinary action, documenting and counseling employees, recommend reprimands, admonishments, and employee terminations.
  • Evaluates employee performance, counsel employees on ratings and recommends corrective action on any area requiring improvement.
  • Recommends personnel actions requests for promotion, reassignment, and incentive awards.
  • Approves annual leave and sick leave for employees.
  • Maintains subsidiary time and attendance records on subordinate employees.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.
