Job Summary

• Perform expert small engine repairs on gas, battery-operated, and electric tools (mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, pressure washers, generators, tillers) and professional window/door screen repairs (rescreening, frame fabrication, spline replacement) in the Rental and Repair Shop of a locally owned Ace Hardware store.
• Work directly with customers to gather detailed information, troubleshoot issues, and return equipment “better than new” with clear explanations and preventive advice.
• Support rental fleet readiness through minor preventive maintenance and keep the shop organized, safe, and customer-ready.
• Full-time or part-time role with full tool set, screen station, and brand-specific training (STIHL, Honda, EGO, Briggs & Stratton).

Key Responsibilities

• Customer Interaction & Troubleshooting
  • Interview customers to collect complete symptom history (when it started, what changed, fuel type, last use); ask follow-up questions to pinpoint root cause.
  • Diagnose no-starts, bogging, smoking, vibration, battery/charger faults, or electrical issues on gas, battery, and corded tools.
  • Explain findings, repair options, and costs in plain language; offer same-day, next-day, or “while-you-shop” service when possible.
• Small Engine & Power Equipment Repair
  • Repair 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines: carb rebuilds, fuel system flush, ignition coils, spark plugs, recoil starters, blade/clutch service.
  • Service battery-operated tools (EGO, Milwaukee, DeWalt, STIHL): battery diagnostics, charger testing, motor brush replacement, switch repair.
  • Perform landscape equipment repairs: sharpen mower blades/chainsaw chains, replace belts, cables, wheels, tines; adjust carb, governor, and safety switches.
  • Conduct minor rental fleet maintenance: oil changes, air filters, spark plugs, tire pressure, battery load tests, and 50-point PM checklists.
• Screen Repair & Fabrication
  • Measure, cut, and bend aluminum frame stock on screen table; build custom window and solar/screen door frames to 1/16" accuracy.
  • Install fiberglass, pet-resistant, solar, or no-see-um mesh using spline roller; replace corners, pulls, and tension springs.
  • Repair customer frames: patch tears, re-spline, straighten bends, replace door hardware.
  • Build and stock common pre-made screen sizes for instant grab-and-go sales.
• Documentation & Parts
  • Write detailed repair tickets: symptoms, diagnosis, parts used, labor, test results, photos.
  • Lookup and order OEM parts via PartSmart, STIHL iCademy, Honda PowerLink, EGO portal.
  • Test every repair: start/run under load, verify battery charge cycles, check screen tension/operation.
• Shop Standards & Support
  • Keep bench and screen area clean, tools organized, floor swept; lock flammables nightly.
  • Assist rental counter during peaks: check-in/check-out, demo safe operation, propane fills.
  • Tag out unsafe equipment and red-tag customer units with safety risks.
• All other duties as assigned by store management.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Education
  • High school diploma or GED; EETC certification, small-engine trade school, or equivalent experience.
• Experience
  • 2 years combined small engine/power equipment repair (gas battery) and 1 year screen repair/fabrication; rental shop experience preferred.
• Skills & Abilities
  • Expert troubleshooter—diagnoses no-start in <10 min, finds intermittent battery faults, rebuilds carb in <30 min.
  • Exceptional customer communication—turns frustrated “it just died” stories into clear repair plans and loyal repeat customers.
  • Proficiency with compression testers, multimeters, torque wrenches, carb tools, screen rollers, miter saw.
  • Comfort explaining technical repairs simply and upselling preventive items (fuel stabilizer, battery care kits, pet screen).
• Physical Requirements
  • Lift/carry up to 50 lbs repeatedly (mowers, generators, pressure washers).
  • Stand/walk full shift; bend, kneel in shop bay; fine motor skills for tiny carb jets and spline rolling.
  • Work indoors/outdoors in heat, cold, noise, and fuel fumes.
  • Age 18 years or older

  • Weekend and peak-season availability (spring startup, fall tune-up, screen season).
