Assistant Store Manager-Operations

Job Summary

  • Serve as the Assistant Store Manager with primary oversight and focus on Receiving/Warehouse, Rental/Repair Shop, and Cashier/Front-End operations while supporting overall store performance.
  • Drive operational excellence, shrink reduction, customer satisfaction, and revenue in these critical back- and front-of-house areas through hands-on leadership, process improvement, and team development.
  • Act as the Manager on Duty during assigned shifts, with full authority for the entire store while maintaining a strong visible presence in Receiving, Rental/Repair, and the front lanes.
  • Full-time salaried leadership role with keyholder status, override authority, budget responsibility, and direct path to Store Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receiving/Warehouse, Rental/Repair, & Cashier Leadership & Performance
    • Oversee Receiving/Warehouse (accuracy, credits, Sort & Segregate, BOPIS, backroom organization), Rental/Repair (fleet readiness, repairs, propane, add-ons), and Cashier/Front-End (speed, accuracy, Rewards, cash office).
    • Set and achieve departmental goals for receiving accuracy (99% ), rental availability (95% ), repair turnaround, cashier scan rate, and front-end metrics (Rewards attachment, impulse sales).
    • Lead Receiving Supervisor, Rental/Repair Supervisor, Cashier Supervisor, and their teams (15–30 associates); write or approve schedules, conduct reviews, and build bench strength.
  • Modeling & Ensuring Impeccable Customer Service
    • Maintain visible presence at the rental counter, propane cage, front lanes, and dock; personally demo equipment, fill propane, jump registers, resolve repair disputes, and handle receiving escalations to model impeccable service.
    • Monitor service levels store-wide with emphasis on these areas: zero wait at rental/propane, flawless BOPIS hand-offs, lines ≤2 customers, and perfect rental check-in/out experiences.
    • Coach in real time and recognize outstanding behaviors publicly.
  • Store-Wide Support & Manager on Duty Duties
    • Act as MOD on rotating shifts: open/close store, handle escalations, authorize high-level overrides/discounts, coordinate cross-department tasks.
    • Support sales floor departments during peaks; ensure seamless flow (e.g., Rental trenchers to Garden, received freight to Hardware).
    • Partner with Store Manager on hiring, training, safety, compliance, and corporate programs.
  • Operational Excellence in Focus Areas
    • Drive receiving accuracy and vendor credit recovery; audit invoices, BOPIS staging, and Sort & Segregate compliance.
    • Ensure rental fleet and repair shop standards: clean trucks/equipment, repair turnaround, parts inventory, propane DOT compliance.
    • Optimize front-end processes: scheduling, POS mastery, safe balancing, deposits, change orders, and impulse merchandising.
    • Lead process improvements (unload-to-floor time, rental add-on %, cashier upsell training).
  • Financial & Compliance Oversight
    • Monitor expenses and shrink in Receiving (credits, damages), Rental/Repair (parts, fleet maintenance), and Cashier (over/short, cash office).
    • Achieve budgeted GP%, payroll, and shrink targets for these areas.
    • Ensure compliance with propane regulations, forklift/OSHA, cash-handling bonding, rental contracts, and hazardous waste (Sort & Segregate).
  • All other duties as assigned by store management

 

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Education
    • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Operations, or related field preferred; equivalent experience accepted.
  • Experience
    • 3 years multi-department retail management; 2 years leadership in receiving/warehouse, rental/repair, and/or front-end operations required.
    • Proven success reducing shrink, improving accuracy, and growing rental/propane revenue.
  • Skills & Abilities
    • Deep operational expertise in receiving processes, rental systems, small-engine/propane basics, and cash office procedures.
    • Exceptional leadership presence—models service, develops supervisors, and drives accountability with positivity.
    • Mastery of  rental software, Mango analytics, P&L review, scheduling tools, and vendor portals.
    • Analytical thinker who turns receiving variances into zero-shrink and rental demos into add-on sales.
  • Physical Requirements
    • Walk 10–15 miles per shift across store, dock, shop bay, and front lanes.
    • Lift/carry 50–70 lbs (rental equipment, propane tanks, freight cases); demo tools and load trucks.
    • Flexible for open-to-close availability, including early receiving trucks and late rental returns.
  • Other
    • Valid driver’s license clean record (rental truck/delivery oversight).
    • Current forklift and propane certification preferred.
    • Age 18 years or older
    • Full keyholder with highest-level overrides and cash office access.
    • Passion for operational precision and creating seamless experiences from dock to checkout.

Salary : $59,000 - $72,000
