Job Summary

• Assist customers with irrigation systems, sprinklers, drip lines, timers, pipe, fittings, and accessories from major brands (Rain Bird, Hunter, Toro, Orbit, Irritrol, DIG, Netafim).
• Drive sales through expert product knowledge, basic system design, merchandising, stocking, occasional Rental/Repair support, and propane sales help.
• Maintain a clean, fully stocked sprinkler aisle, demo station, and propane cage to inspire DIY and contractor projects.
• Full-time, part-time, or seasonal positions with flexible scheduling, brand training, outdoor garden-center exposure, and propane fill certification.
• Praise worthy customer service is our goal in every customer interaction.

Key Responsibilities

• Product Knowledge & Brand Expertise
  • Master Rain Bird 5000 rotors, Hunter MP Rotators, Toro Precision nozzles, Orbit B-hyve timers, Hunter Hydrawise, Irritrol controllers, Netafim drip, and DIG micro-sprays – specs, coverage, PSI/GPM, Wi-Fi features.
  • Compare brands side-by-side; recommend smart vs. battery vs. mechanical, pop-up vs. gear-drive, PEX vs. PVC.
  • Explain backflow preventers, pressure regulators, rain sensors, and zone valves per local codes.
• Customer Consultation & Basic Design
  • Sketch simple zone layouts on graph paper or Hunter/Rain Bird apps; calculate head spacing, pipe runs, and water demand.
  • Guide DIYers on trenching, gluing, winterization; help contractors with job-lot quotes and will-call pallets.
  • Demo timer programming, nozzle swap, drip emitter flow, and pressure testing at the counter.
• Merchandising & Stocking
  • Build planogrammed aisles, endcaps (smart controller bundle), and working demo stations (pop-up heads on PVC riser).
  • Stock fittings bins, pipe racks, timer wall, drip kits, and propane cage (20-lb tanks, adapters, hoses).
  • Hang brand POP, QR code tutorials, and coverage charts; keep PVC cement locked and ventilated.
• Sales & Upsell
  • Process POS transactions; scan Ace Rewards, apply contractor discounts, issue rain checks.
  • Upsell swing joints, funny pipe, Christy boxes, Teflon tape, pipe cutters, propane accessories, and extended warranties.
  • Promote pro pricing, bulk poly pipe, and seasonal clinics.
• Propane Sales Help
  • Fill 20-lb BBQ tanks, exchange 1-lb bottles, and re-certify out-of-date cylinders using digital scale and DOT log.
  • Educate on leak checks, O-ring replacement, tank storage, and grill hose compatibility.
  • Maintain propane cage at 50 tanks; rotate stock, inspect for dents, purge air on new fills.
• Rental/Repair Support (Occasional)
  • Assist with rental trencher check-out, pressure-washer winterization, or screen repair triage during peaks.
  • Pull rental rotor bits, pipe pullers, or propane torches; update rental log.
  • Jump repair counter for nozzle cleaning, timer battery swap, or drip leak test.
• Safety & Compliance
  • Secure PVC cement/primer and propane in locked areas; verify age for spray paint.
  • Load 50-ft PEX coils, 100-lb valve boxes, or 20-lb propane tanks into vehicles safely.
  • Wear gloves, safety glasses, and propane PPE; stage spill kit and eyewash.

• All other duties as assigned by store management

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Education
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
• Experience
  • Irrigation retail, landscaping, or plumbing experience a plus; brand and propane training provided.
• Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of major sprinkler brands, hydraulics basics, zone design, app-based controllers, and propane safety.
  • Friendly, patient communicator who turns “I need sprinklers” into a $300 zoned system plus a full propane tank.
  • Basic math for GPM/PSI calculations, coverage areas, bulk pricing, and propane weight checks.
  • Comfort with POS, inventory scanner, planogram resets, and propane fill station.
• Physical Requirements
  • Lift/carry up to 50 lbs repeatedly (PEX coils, valve boxes, 20-lb propane tanks).
  • Stand/walk full shift indoors and outdoors; bend, kneel, reach overhead bins; work in heat, sun, wind.
  • Push/pull pipe carts, demo risers, and propane hand trucks across gravel or concrete.
• Other
  • Passion for water-efficient landscaping, smart irrigation, and safe propane handling.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in the garden center and occasionally in Rental/Repair or propane cage.
  • Weekend and peak spring/summer availability required.
  • Commitment to BigToolBox’s helpful culture and contractor loyalty.
  • Propane certification (or ability to earn within 30 days).
