What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate position at BHI - Bertelsmann Healthcare Investments?
About BHI
Bertelsmann Healthcare Investments (BHI) is a venture fund backing healthcare software and services companies from pre-seed through Series A. Headquartered in New York and with a European Office in Berlin, we partner with founders from day one, with the flexibility to double down as they grow.
We bring flexible capital, transatlantic reach, and deep healthcare expertise to every partnership. For non-US companies, we are often the first U.S. point of contact — bridging innovative ideas with the world's largest healthcare market.
Our portfolio includes companies like Ataraxis (AI-driven cancer care), Birches (virtual gambling addiction treatment), Doccla (remote patient monitoring), Paytient (patient payment infrastructure), and Teton.ai (AI for senior care) — and we're backing many more like them. We show up for founders with long-term conviction, deep operational expertise, and genuine commitment to their success.
We are a small, high-conviction team with a flat structure, a founder-first mindset, and a genuine belief that the best healthcare companies are still being built. We work hard, move fast, and take the long view.
Role Description
We believe deals are won by those who want them the most. You will be at the center of our investment process by generating your own deal flow, leading our early deal assessment, and quarterbacking our deep dive diligences (memo development, financial modelling, market and competitive research). You will also be an integral part of our thesis development work. You'll work directly with BHI’s senior leadership, with real ownership from day one. For the right person, this is a path to a long-term investing career at BHI. This is a high-impact opportunity to join a dynamic transatlantic fund and kickstart your career in early-stage venture capital.
Core Responsibilities
- Sourcing: Drive deal flow through outbound founder outreach, events, personal network development, ecosystem participation (thematic dinners/speaking, talent & advisor networks), and publishing content that builds BHI's presence.
- Early Deal Assessment: Quickly and rigorously parse opportunities - evaluate business models, market dynamics, and founding teams to surface the most compelling deals to the IC.
- Diligence: Lead diligence on priority investments - financial modeling, market analysis, reference calls, and investment memo preparation. This, combined with sourcing and deal assessment, makes up 80% of the role.
- Market Mapping & Thesis Development: Develop deep sector and technology views within healthcare software and services; contribute to BHI's evolving investment thesis.
- Portfolio Support: Connect portfolio companies with advisors, BD contacts, and talent; contribute to strategic discussions. Board and observer roles available over time based on performance.
- Team & Operations: Contribute to firm-building initiatives and cross-functional projects as the fund grows.
What We're Looking For
Most importantly: You're a self-starter. You see what needs to be done and do it - without being told and even under ambiguity. You're competitive and want to win: getting to a founder first, developing the sharpest market view.
What You Bring
- 2–4 years of experience in venture capital, growth equity, investment banking, consulting, product/strategy in a tech company, ex-founder, or a similarly rigorous environment
- Strong financial modeling skills: you build, stress-test, and communicate models fluently
- Sharp instinct for attractive business models: you quickly identify what makes a company interesting and can articulate why
- Genuine curiosity about the future of healthcare software and services
- Proficiency with AI to build agentive workflows and supercharge your productivity
How You Work
- Analytical - you go deep, think clearly, and produce thorough work product
- Relational - you build trust quickly; founders and partners want to work with you
- Clear communicator - you represent BHI's perspective credibly in writing and in person
- Low ego, high ownership - you do what it takes, at whatever level the work requires
- NYC -based or willing to relocate
What Success Looks Like
- 1 month: You understand BHI's portfolio, thesis, and investment process. You're engaging with inbound deal flow, supporting a first diligence, and building your first ecosystem relationships.
- 4 months: You're generating meaningful deal flow and assessing opportunities with speed and rigor. You've brought at least one compelling opportunity to the IC and have a strong view on 1–2 sectors within our focus areas.
- 9 months: You're a core contributor to BHI's pipeline — you've led diligence on multiple deals, built a recognizable ecosystem presence, and developed a track record of investment judgment. There is a clear, shared view of what continued growth at BHI looks like for you.
