What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief of Staff position at BHI - Bertelsmann Healthcare Investments?
About BHI
Bertelsmann Healthcare Investments (BHI) is a venture fund backing healthcare software and services companies from pre-seed through Series A. Headquartered in New York and with a European Office in Berlin, we partner with founders from day one, with the flexibility to double down as they grow.
We bring flexible capital, transatlantic reach, and deep healthcare expertise to every partnership. For non-US companies, we are often the first U.S. point of contact — bridging innovative ideas with the world's largest healthcare market.
Our portfolio includes companies like Ataraxis (AI-driven cancer care), Birches (virtual gambling addiction treatment), Doccla (remote patient monitoring), Paytient (patient payment infrastructure), and Teton.ai (AI for senior care) — and we're backing many more like them. We show up for founders with long-term conviction, deep operational expertise, and genuine commitment to their success.
We are a small, high-conviction team with a flat structure, a founder-first mindset, and a genuine belief that the best healthcare companies are still being built. We work hard, move fast, and take the long view.
Role Description
This is not a typical early-career role. As Chief of Staff, you'll work directly alongside BHI’s senior leadership with visibility into every corner of the fund — from how we evaluate companies to how we support them after investment, from how we operate internally to how we show up for our LP. You'll also be operating in an AI-native environment, using and building agentic workflows that are reshaping how a modern VC fund runs. We've designed this role as an on-ramp to an investing career for the right person.
Core Responsibilities
- Fund Operations: Own operational processes: deal flow & portfolio meeting, investment tracking, portfolio reporting, (agentic) workflows, vendor relationships.
- Communications & Marketing: Own BHI's external presence - develop and execute our marketing plan, manage and organize our external engagements (speaking, dinners, events), run our talent and advisory networks.
- Internal Strategy: Lead priority projects: market research, competitive analyses, process improvements, and special initiatives
- Team & Culture: Keep us organized and connected - coordinate external meetings, team rhythms, offsites, and internal communications as the firm scales.
- Investments: Play an active role in investment activity - supporting due diligence, contributing to deal memos, joining founder calls, and assisting with sector mapping and portfolio company support (for the right candidate).
What We're Looking For
Most importantly: You're a self-starter. You see what needs to be done and do it - without being told and even under ambiguity.
What you bring:
- 2–4 years of experience in consulting, banking, venture, marketing/communications, or a high-growth startup
- Community & brand builder - you like to connect with people, create interactions, plus experience/documented interest in strategic, hands-on marketing and brand building
- Diligent and logical - comfortable with data, structured analysis, and thorough work product
- AI-native - Proficiency with AI tools and agentic workflows, or a demonstrated ability to learn fast
- Genuine healthcare and investment interest - curious about the problems our portfolio companies are solving
How you work:
- Clear communicator - in writing and in person, representing BHI with founders, LPs, and partners
- Highly organized - able to manage multiple workstreams without dropping balls
- Low ego, high ownership - equally comfortable with strategic and executional work
- NYC -based or willing to relocate
What Success Looks Like
- 1 month: You have command of BHI's operations and processes. Fund operations run smoothly under your ownership. You’ve started enhancing our workflows (often with AI). You're proactively flagging issues — not waiting to be directed. And you’ve built trust with the team.
- 3 months: You're driving internal strategy projects end-to-end. Our marketing plan is in motion. Our talent and advisor networks have been formalized and are live. You have a strong view of our thesis and the healthcare landscape.
- 12 months: You're a critical part of the team, with visible impact across operations, portfolio relations, and strategy. You're contributing to investment-related work: sitting in on founder calls, supporting due diligence, and developing early sector perspectives.
