About Beyond Rhetoric

Beyond Rhetoric is a youth-empowerment nonprofit serving youth under the supervision of Maryland’s Department of Juvenile Services. We use mentorship, education, and community engagement to foster social-emotional growth and long-term success for youth in detention and during re-entry. We believe in building authentic relationships that transform lives — one conversation, one connection, one breakthrough at a time.

What You’ll Do

The Program Coordinator/Volunteer Coordinator plays a key role in expanding our impact and ensuring consistent, high-quality programming. You will:

  • Recruit, screen, onboard, train, and retain a committed volunteer corps.
  • Build and strengthen community partnerships and develop engaging program offerings for youth in detention.
  • Systematize data collection and analysis to track youth and volunteer outcomes.
  • Maintain communications, records, and recognition systems for both youth and volunteers.
  • Work flexible hours (after-school and weekends) to deliver and oversee programming.

Expected Outcomes

Your work will help ensure that participating youth:

  • Lower emotional barriers and begin trusting mentors through consistent engagement.
  • Grow their sense of self-worth and accomplishment through program activities.
  • Demonstrate increasing respect and social-emotional maturity, including positive communication and self-correction.
  • Build supportive networks that guide them through re-entry and beyond.
  • Return as mentors to help others, continuing the cycle of transformation.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; minimum: college senior (reduced course load) or equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience as a program or volunteer coordinator, or working with youth in detention, re-entry, or community programs.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable with data tracking, record-keeping, and evaluation systems.
  • Must have flexible availability after-school and on weekends to meet program needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building and managing community partnerships.
  • Familiarity with volunteer management systems and youth development frameworks.
  • Personal connection or compelling motivation to work with detained or system-involved youth.
  • Experience training or supervising volunteers.

Why You’ll Love It Here

  • You’ll see your impact firsthand — watching youth open up, grow, and thrive through trust and consistency.
  • You’ll work with a passionate, purpose-driven team dedicated to real change, not just talk.
  • You’ll join an organization that values authentic relationships, growth, and resilience — for youth, volunteers, and staff alike.
  • You’ll help build a model of community re-entry that breaks cycles and restores hope.
