Job Title: Instructor of Mathematics

Division: College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics, Department of Mathematics and Physics

Reporting Structure: 1) Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Physics; 2) Dean of the College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics; and 3) Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs

Job Summary: The Instructor of Mathematics position is a full-time faculty appointment focused primarily on excellence in undergraduate teaching, student learning, and academic success across the mathematics curriculum. The faculty member is expected to teach a broad range of mathematics courses, with particular emphasis on foundational and pre-calculus coursework that supports student progression into STEM and other degree pathways. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to high-quality instruction, effective pedagogy, and the use of evidence-based practices that improve student learning outcomes.

While this is primarily a teaching-focused appointment, the faculty member is expected to engage in professional development and scholarly activity related to mathematics education, student learning, and the continuous improvement of teaching practices in their own classes and across the department. Such work may include curriculum development, assessment of student learning outcomes, instructional innovation, participation in educational workshops or conferences, and applied research related to teaching and learning in mathematics.

Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) is a historically black college or university (HBCU) that seeks avid scholars dedicated to excellence in teaching and research as well as the continued enhancement of the academic environment for students and colleagues. Founded by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune in 1904, B-CU is a United Methodist Church-related university offering baccalaureate and master's degrees. Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate mathematics courses consistent with departmental needs, including developmental mathematics, general education mathematics, and courses that support progression to calculus and other upper-level study.
  • Maintain a full-time teaching load of 15 credit hours per semester, or as assigned by the department and college.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to student learning, academic rigor. and excellence in instruction.
  • Advise and mentor students, including those who are academically at risk or underprepared, and support student retention and success initiatives.
  • Hold regular office hours and, as needed, provide recitations, supplemental instruction. or other academic support activities that strengthen student performance.
  • Participate in student recruitment, departmental programming, and activities that promote the growth and visibility of the mathematics program.
  • Engage in professional development and scholarly activity related to mathematics education, pedagogy, assessment, curriculum improvement, and student success.
  • Collaborate with departmental faculty on efforts to improve teaching effectiveness, student outcomes, and the overall quality of instruction in the mathematics curriculum.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university committees, meetings, and activities, including commencement and other official university functions.
  • Summer teaching may be available based on enrollment and institutional need; summer assignments are not guaranteed.


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • A master's degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematics education, or a closely related field is required; a doctorate is preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and student-centered instruction is required.
  • Evidence of successful teaching at the college level is preferred.
  • Strong interest in teaching foundational mathematics courses, including developmental and pre-calculus coursework, is required.
  • Commitment to using effective and innovative instructional strategies to improve student learning and success is required.
  • Interest in educational research, classroom assessment, curriculum development, or other scholarly activity related to the teaching and learning of mathematics is preferred.
  • Experience supporting diverse student populations, including students who are academically underprepared, is highly desirable.
  • Applicants who are available to teach day, evening, and potentially online courses are preferred.
  • The candidate must be prepared to affirm and support the Christian and liberal arts mission of Bethune-Cookman University.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required.


Physical Requirements: The candidate must be able to handle minor tasks associated with their position and be versed in maintaining safety regulations in laboratory environments.
