Lead and grow a mechanical engineering practice across complex, high-impact projects
We are seeking a PE-licensed Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead the design, delivery, and growth of a mechanical engineering practice within a collaborative multidisciplinary environment. This role oversees complex commercial, institutional, healthcare, higher education, mixed-use, and government projects while guiding team leadership, technical excellence, and client relationships.
Role and Responsibilities
- Lead and grow the mechanical engineering team, including staffing, mentorship, and department development.
- Oversee the design and delivery of complex mechanical systems projects.
- Serve as Engineer of Record (EOR) and provide technical leadership across projects.
- Lead the design of HVAC, central plant, sustainable, and specialized mechanical systems.
- Coordinate with architecture, structural, civil, electrical, and plumbing/fire protection teams.
- Ensure compliance with IMC, IBC, ASHRAE, IECC, NFPA, and related industry standards.
- Support project planning, budgets, schedules, and resource management.
- Participate in client meetings, business development, and strategic growth initiatives.
- Support proposals, pursuits, and long-term client relationships.
Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 10 years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, including leadership responsibilities.
- Active PE license in MD, VA, and DC required.
- Strong experience with HVAC and complex mechanical systems design.
- Deep knowledge of ASHRAE, IMC, IBC, IECC, NFPA, and related codes.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary projects and coordinating within BIM environments.
- Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and mechanical engineering analysis tools.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and client management skills.
Salary and Benefits
- Commensurate with experience, target salary range: $150,000 – $180,000 annually.
