What are the responsibilities and job description for the Crossing Guard - Temporary/Part-Time position at Berrien County?
DUTIES:
- Safely assists students and pedestrians crossing designated roadways at or near E.P. Clarke Elementary School in Royalton Township.
- Monitors traffic, pedestrian activity, and potential hazards to determine when crossings are safe.
- Directs pedestrian traffic using authorized hand signals and other approved crossing-control methods.
- Maintains a safe and orderly crossing environment for students, school personnel, motorists, and pedestrians.
- Reports traffic hazards, unsafe conditions, and other safety concerns to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office and maintains regular communication with Sheriff's Office personnel regarding crossing operations.
- Follows established procedures and directives.
- Reports promptly for assigned shifts and remains at the designated crossing for the full scheduled duty period.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
- A background check will be conducted prior to employment.
- Will be required to successfully complete any training required by Berrien County and/or the Sheriff's Office.
- Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, stand for extended periods, and remain alert and attentive while performing crossing duties.
- The position is scheduled Monday through Friday on days when school is in session, during designated before- and after-school crossing periods.
- The schedule and assignment may vary based on the school calendar and operational needs of the Sheriff’s Office. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Basic knowledge of pedestrian and traffic safety practices.
- Able to recognize potentially unsafe traffic and pedestrian situations and exercise sound judgment when determining when it is safe for pedestrians to cross.
- Capable of following verbal and written instructions.
- Able to remain calm and professional in a school environment.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, school personnel, the public, and law enforcement personnel.
