What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Superintendent of Flatwork position at Beaver Concrete Construction?
Job Overview:
Beaver Concrete Construction is seeking an experienced General Superintendent of Flatwork to lead our flatwork division's field operations. This role oversees approximately 8-9 pouring/finishing and site-prep crews supporting both residential and commercial projects. You'll work closely with both on-site superintendents and project managers, and be responsible for the overall success of the flatwork division — ensuring jobs are scheduled, staffed, and run safely and on time — while developing your team and being the go-to technical resource for field decisions. Staying current through continuing education in concrete practices and techniques is expected as part of this role.
What You'll Do:
- Oversee and coordinate all flatwork field crews through the Pouring/Finishing Superintendent and Prep Superintendent, ensuring jobs are properly sequenced and staffed
- Manage day-to-day scheduling of flatwork jobs across residential and commercial projects, proactively communicating crew capacity, scheduling conflicts, and staffing needs
- Serve as the primary point of field leadership for the Pouring/Finishing Superintendent and Prep Superintendent, providing guidance, training, and support
- Make technical field decisions requiring hands-on concrete experience (site conditions, forming/prep methods, sequencing, troubleshooting on-site issues)
- Coordinate with project managers to align crew scheduling with customer commitments and job timelines
- Partner with the equipment dispatcher on stone slinger and equipment needs for flatwork jobs
- Ensure jobsite safety standards and quality control across all flatwork crews
- Step in on active jobsites as needed to solve problems, maintain schedule, and uphold quality
- Help identify and develop future crew leadership from within the team
Requirements:
- 5 years of hands-on experience in concrete flatwork (commercial and/or residential), with progressively increasing leadership responsibility
- Proven experience supervising multiple crews simultaneously
- Strong working knowledge of flatwork methods, prep work, forming, pouring, and finishing techniques
- Ability to read and interpret site plans and drawings
- Strong scheduling and organizational skills — comfortable juggling multiple active jobsites
- Clear communicator who can work well with crew foremen, project managers, and customers
- A leader who can train and develop crew members, not just manage them
- Reliable, hands-on, and comfortable being on jobsites regularly (this is not a desk role)
- Valid driver's license
Preferred:
- Experience building strong, collaborative working relationships with crew leadership
- OSHA 30 certification
- OSHA 10 certification
- CPR certification
- Understanding of ACI (American Concrete Institute) requirements
- Familiarity with construction scheduling/project management software (e.g., BuilderTrend)
- Prior experience as a foreman or superintendent directly managing crews
