Assistant Controller- Silver Spring, MD
Overview
The Assistant Controller supports the Controller in overseeing daily accounting operations and ensuring accurate, timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP. This role plays a key part in month‑end close, financial statement preparation, internal controls, and process improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate is hands‑on, detail‑oriented, and comfortable operating in a fast‑paced corporate accounting environment while partnering cross‑functionally with finance and business stakeholders.
- Assist with oversight of the general ledger, including preparation, review, and approval of journal entries and accounting transactions
- Support month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
- Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations, investigating and resolving reconciling items
- Assist with the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis, partnering with management to explain fluctuations
- Maintain and enhance internal controls, ensuring compliance with accounting policies and procedures
- Assist with external audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting, including preparation of PBC schedules
- Review and support accounts payable, accrued expenses, and payroll-related entries for accuracy and completeness
- Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, and efficiency gains within accounting operations
- Support documentation of accounting policies, procedures, and workflows to mitigate key person risk
- Assist the Controller with ad hoc analysis, special projects, and cross‑functional initiatives
