Overview
A well-established professional services organization headquartered in downtown Norfolk is seeking a hands-on Accounting Manager to oversee a small but high-performing accounting team. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this role is responsible for managing all day-to-day accounting operations within the company's collections accounting function.

Responsibilities
- Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor a team of accounting professionals, providing coaching, feedback, and technical support to ensure timely and accurate work.
- Operational Oversight: Manage daily accounting processes including account reconciliations, accounts receivable, collections, and client remittances.
- Process Improvement: Identify and implement strategies to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls within the accounting function.
- Account Reconciliation: Oversee periodic reconciliations of client accounts to ensure data integrity and compliance with internal policies.
- Payment Processing: Monitor and post payments and remittances promptly and accurately, ensuring the integrity of client records.
- Audit & Compliance: Support internal and external audits, preparing schedules and ensuring adherence to regulatory and firm standards.
- Policy Development: Maintain and update accounting policies, procedures, and documentation to ensure best practices are followed.
- Training & Development: Develop staff through one-on-one mentorship, cross-training, and structured performance feedback.
- Deadline Management: Establish and enforce departmental deadlines to ensure smooth workflow and timely reporting.
- Client & Internal Communication: Coordinate with internal departments and clients to resolve inquiries, discrepancies, or billing issues efficiently.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
- Minimum 3-5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least one year in a supervisory or lead role
- Prior experience in collections or professional services accounting is strongly preferred
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative mindset
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general ledger accounting systems; familiarity with collections software is a plus
- Demonstrated leadership ability with a commitment to mentoring and developing staff
