Typical Day in the Role
• Purpose of the Team: The purpose of this team is to support managers and employees by providing HR consultation, guidance on performance management, and assistance with complex employee and organizational matters.
• Key projects: This role will contribute to short-term CRM/case management activities focused on data entry and accuracy, along with broader organizational support as needed.
Candidate Requirements
• Disqualifiers: Candidates with a lack of HR experience and limited or no experience providing performance management consultation to managers will not be eligible for the role.
• Best vs. Average: The ideal resume would contain foundational experience in HR, employee relations, or a related field, along with a working knowledge of performance management practices and HR policies. Candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to build trust with managers and employees, while effectively managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Experience in a large or matrixed organization is preferred but not required.
We’re seeking a Human Resources (HR) Consultant with deep expertise in performance management and consulting—along with a passion for using data, automation, and emerging technologies to reimagine how HR delivers value. In this role, you’ll partner closely with HR teams, managers, and business leaders across the Microsoft Commercial organization to activate our culture and elevate manager capability through scalable, data-driven solutions.
As an HR Consultant, you will:
Coach and advise managers and employees on complex workplace matters, using data and insights to inform recommendations.
Provide expert consultation on career development, performance, workplace behavior, and policy interpretation.
Collaborate with HR Business Partners to support and enable strategic people priorities.
Design and implement scalable, automated solutions that strengthen manager effectiveness and reduce manual effort across the HR lifecycle.
Identify opportunities to streamline workflows, improve decision quality, and free up time for higher-impact consulting work.
Partner across a matrixed environment—including HR, Legal, and Compliance—to shape local policies and practices.
Success in this role requires the ability to remain impartial and objective, applying Microsoft’s practices, policies, and philosophies consistently to foster an inclusive and equitable workplace—while continuously looking for ways to modernize how the work gets done.
Responsibilities
Leads the diagnosis and resolution of increasingly complex issues related to policy, culture, or employee relations concerns—partnering with HR and Legal as needed—while prioritizing a safe and professional work environment.
Identifies and escalates trends in employee relations and works with partners to implement solutions that reduce recurring issues and improve overall outcomes.
Provides expert consulting to managers and employees on HR programs, processes, and initiatives; influences decision-making through strong judgment and context-based insights.
Uses data-driven insights to anticipate training and capability needs; recommends and delivers targeted solutions such as training or communications.
Evaluates HR processes for opportunities to streamline and improve efficiency, partnering with HR operations and technology teams to design and scale solutions.
Applies Microsoft values and HR policies across programs such as leave, retirement, immigration, and performance management; ensures compliance and consistency.
Embodies Microsoft’s culture and values in all interactions.
Top 3 Must-Have HARD Skills & years of experience for each:
HR or Employee Relations Experience (2–4 years): Supporting managers or employees with HR-related questions or issues
Performance Management Knowledge (2 years): Basic understanding of performance processes and coaching support
Case Management / Documentation (1–2 years): Experience tracking and documenting issues or requests in a structured way
