1st Class Welder (All Processes | Shipyard)

Bay Metals & Fabrication, LLC (BMF) is hiring 1st Class Welders to support our ship repair operations in the Hampton Roads area. We are currently seeking candidates for both day and night shift.

Position Summary

The 1st Class Welder is a highly skilled tradesperson responsible for performing complex welding tasks using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW (MIG), and GTAW (TIG) in all positions. This role requires the ability to work from blueprints and technical documents, perform layouts and fit-ups, and ensure all work meets BMF and NAVSEA workmanship standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform welding using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW (MIG), and GTAW (TIG) in all positions (flat, vertical, overhead)
  • Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, work orders, and CFRs
  • Perform layouts and mark reference points using measuring tools (rule, square, scribe, templates)
  • Execute proper fit-ups using jigs, fixtures, guides, and hand tools
  • Inspect completed welds for compliance with specifications and weld workmanship standards
  • Ensure all work meets NAVSEA and company quality requirements
  • Maintain a safe work environment and follow all safety policies

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to 2nd and 3rd Class Welders and Helpers
  • May serve as a team lead on assigned jobs
  • Ability to clearly explain welding processes, procedures, and expectations

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in multi-process welding (SMAW, FCAW, GMAW required; GTAW preferred)
  • Ability to weld all positions and pass a multi-process weld test
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
  • Experience with fit-up, layout, and structural fabrication
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA welding standards and weld workmanship requirements preferred
  • Ability to work independently and lead others when required
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain DBIDS access and gain entry to all applicable shipyard facilities

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in confined spaces, tanks, voids, and at heights
  • Capable of lifting 50 lbs, climbing, bending, and working in physically demanding conditions
  • Must be comfortable working in a shipyard/industrial environment

Pay: $31.00 - $35.00 per hour
