Position Summary

Bay Metals & Fabrication is seeking a Material Planner to support ship repair and modernization projects for U.S. Navy, commercial, and government vessel programs. This role is responsible for planning, tracking, and coordinating materials to ensure production teams have what they need to meet schedules and milestones.

The Material Planner works closely with Production, Procurement, Warehousing, and Program Management to maintain material readiness across multiple active projects, helping minimize delays and cost impacts.

Key Responsibilities

Material Planning & Coordination

  • Review work packages, specifications, drawings, and schedules to determine material requirements
  • Develop and maintain Material Requirement Lists (MRLs) and material status reports
  • Coordinate material needs based on production sequencing and installation schedules
  • Identify long lead-time materials and potential substitutions early

Production Support

  • Interface daily with Production, Project Management, and Purchasing teams
  • Track shortages, backorders, and delivery delays impacting schedules
  • Support planning meetings and work package readiness reviews
  • Assist with material kitting and staging for shipboard work
  • Submit Condition Found Reports (CFRs) for material-related issues

Expediting & Vendor Coordination

  • Expedite purchase orders to ensure on-time delivery
  • Communicate with vendors, suppliers, and internal teams on material status
  • Track critical path materials and develop recovery plans for delays
  • Coordinate substitute material approvals when needed

Inventory & Tracking

  • Coordinate with warehouse teams to verify receipts and material condition
  • Maintain material identification, tagging, and traceability
  • Support movement of materials between warehouse, shop, and shipboard locations
  • Track materials using ERP systems, Excel, and SharePoint

Reporting

  • Maintain and report on material readiness, shortages, and long lead items
  • Provide regular updates to Operations and Program Management

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 3–7 years of experience in ship repair, manufacturing, marine operations, or defense contracting
  • Experience supporting U.S. Navy or NAVSEA work preferred
  • Strong understanding of material planning, procurement, and production support
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Teams) and ERP/MRP systems
  • Ability to read technical drawings and work specifications preferred

Preferred Experience

  • Shipyard or industrial environment experience (CMAV, CNO availabilities, emergent work, alterations)
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items and material traceability requirements
  • Experience with Microsoft Project, Power BI, or SharePoint tools

Work Environment

  • Combination of office, warehouse, and shipboard settings
  • May require climbing ladders, entering confined spaces, and working in industrial environments
  • Occasional overtime or weekend work may be required to support project milestones

Requirements

  • Must be able to gain access to all area shipyards (ability to obtain DBIDS required).

Pay: $31.50 - $36.00 per hour
