The Referral Coordinator role is essential in the management of the patient referral process and is a liaison between the clinician, referring specialist, and the patient. The Referral Coordinator must simultaneously maintain an efficient referral system, assist patients and clinicians on an individual basis and manage referrals on systems level by monitoring referral reports and tracking referrals until close out. Referral Coordinators must have knowledge of the three factors by which all referrals are governed: payers and their insurance rules, providers and network participation, and primary care providers and their referring instructions. The Senior Referral Coordinator will perform all the duties of the referral coordinator, as stipulated above, and in addition, take on additional leadership roles in this discipline. Examples of additional responsibilities may include: managing the referral tracking system, training new referral coordinators, maintaining payer related information (i.e., up-date referral reference guides and grids) and producing and analyzing referral related reports that are important to the specialty/ancillary contracted services and/or manage special projects and referral activities. Communication skills are required to persuade or gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas. Responsibility exists to ensure that internal customers are satisfied with service. Communication with external contacts involves handling complaints, making adjustments, corrections, etc.
