Data / Telecom Estimator

Position Summary

The Data / Telecom Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for structured cabling and telecommunications systems. This role analyzes project documents, performs detailed take-offs, evaluates labor and material costs, and supports the successful pursuit of profitable low-voltage and technology projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Review drawings, specifications, RFPs, and scope documents for data and telecom projects
• Perform detailed quantity take-offs for structured cabling, fiber, pathways, and equipment
• Prepare complete cost estimates for structured cabling, wireless, and telecom systems
• Develop labor units, production rates, and installation strategies
• Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing
• Prepare bid proposals, scope clarifications, assumptions, and exclusions
• Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and operations during bid development
• Identify value engineering options and cost-saving alternatives
• Maintain estimating databases, pricing models, and historical cost data
• Participate in post-bid reviews and project handoff meetings
• Ensure estimates comply with industry standards, codes, and company procedures
  

Systems Typically Estimated

• Structured cabling (Cat6, Cat6A)
• Fiber optic systems (single-mode & multimode)
• MDF/IDF buildouts and rack systems
• Cable pathways (conduit, cable tray, J-hooks)
• Wireless access point infrastructure
• Outside plant (OSP) cabling
• Data center and mission-critical environments
  

Qualifications & Experience

• 3 years of experience estimating data/telecom or low-voltage projects
• Strong understanding of structured cabling and telecom systems
• Ability to read and interpret Division 27 drawings, bid manuals, and specifications
• Experience producing detailed material take-offs for estimates utilizing Bluebeam Revu or similar
• Proficiency with Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Excel and standard business software
• Knowledge of labor units, material pricing, and installation methods
• Familiarity with TIA/EIA, BICSI, and applicable codes and standards
• Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills
  

Preferred Skills & Certifications

• Operational field experience as a Data/Telecom Technician, Supervisor, or Project Manager
• BICSI RCDD, DCDC, OSP, RTPM, Installer, or Technician certification
• Experience with design-build and negotiated projects
• Understanding of construction scheduling and coordination
