First Class Structural Welder / Fitter – Shipyard & Structural Steel

Job Summary
We are seeking a First Class Structural Welder / Fitter with proven experience in structural steel fabrication and shipyard environments. This position requires a highly skilled professional capable of reading blueprints, fitting structural members, and performing high-quality welds to code. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-driven, and experienced working in demanding industrial settings, including shipyards, marine construction, or heavy structural fabrication.
Must-Have Qualifications
- 5 years of experience as a structural welder and/or fitter
- Proficient in welding processes such as SMAW (stick) and FCAW (flux core); GTAW (TIG) is a plus
- Strong experience fitting and welding structural steel, plate, beams, and pipe
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, structural drawings, and weld symbols
- Experience with layout, measuring, cutting, and assembling structural components
- Knowledge of OSHA safety standards, PPE, and hazard communication protocols
- Ability to pass weld tests (e.g., 3G/4G plate, structural welds)
- Must have a valid driver’s license, TWIC card, and steel-toe work boots
- Must be reliable, punctual, and able to work overtime and in all weather conditions
- Physically capable of lifting heavy materials, climbing, and working in confined or elevated spaces
- Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident
Preferred Qualifications
- Shipyard or marine fabrication experience
- Experience working with carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum
- Familiarity with rigging, torch cutting, and air arc gouging
- Ability to work from minimal supervision and maintain production pace
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Experience working around other trades in high-activity job sites
Key Responsibilities
- Fit and weld structural components according to blueprints and job specifications
- Perform high-quality welds that meet or exceed industry and project standards
- Layout, align, and assemble parts using jigs, clamps, and measuring tools
- Safely operate welding equipment, torches, grinders, and other fabrication tools
- Conduct inspections of completed work to ensure accuracy and quality
- Follow all OSHA safety regulations, PPE requirements, and job site protocols
- Maintain clean and organized work areas
- Participate in daily safety meetings and report hazards or equipment issues
- Work collaboratively with supervisors, fitters, welders, and other trades
