About the Role
Google’s Data Center team is seeking a Technical Writer to join their hybrid team and support a fast-paced, high-security technical environment. This role will involve creating and updating a variety of operational documentation essential for hardware operations and facilities maintenance across data centers.
The writer will closely collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to develop task-level content such as Standard Work Instructions (SWIs), Emergency Operating Procedures, Business Continuity Plans, and equipment operation and repair instructions.
This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled technical writer to work in a globally distributed team with robust documentation standards and access to advanced proprietary tooling.

Key Responsibilities
- Develop and revise highly detailed technical documentation using internal templates and established formats.
- Work with SMEs to extract accurate procedures and processes for technical audiences.
- Create documentation for data center technicians, including:
- Hardware Operations (e.g., server repair, component removal)
- Facilities Maintenance (e.g., generator or immersion system operations)
- Use internal proprietary tools (similar to GitHub) and Google Docs.
- Follow tight timelines with high attention to accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
Tools & Technology
- Internal proprietary documentation tools (GitHub-like systems)
- Markdown (preferred)
- Google Docs
- FrameMaker or version control tools like Git are a plus (training provided)
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 years of experience in technical writing or similar roles
- Comfortable writing in fast-paced, secure environments
- Prior experience documenting hardware, supply chain, or manufacturing operations
- Familiarity with structured content authoring tools and template-driven documentation
- Ability to learn new systems and tools quickly
- Comfortable working with geographically dispersed teams
- Writing portfolio strongly preferred (or willingness to complete a writing test)
Nice-to-Have Backgrounds
· Candidates from companies like Lockheed Martin, Cisco, IBM, JPL, Delta Mechanical Engineering, or similar high-compliance engineering or manufacturing environments are particularly well-suited.
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree is not mandatory. Equivalent work experience will be considered.
Additional Notes
- This is a high-security data center environment; strict badging and access protocols apply.
- Candidate must be able to commute reliably to the data center location 2–3 times per week.
