Job Overview
The Insurance Authorization Specialist is responsible for managing all aspects of insurance verification, prior authorizations, and reauthorizations for speech therapy services. This role ensures timely approval of services, supports accurate billing, and helps maintain seamless communication between families, therapists, and insurance providers.
Duties
- Verify patient insurance benefits for therapy services prior to evaluation or treatment.
- Obtain and track prior authorizations and reauthorizations for therapy sessions.
- Communicate with insurance companies to resolve issues, appeal denials, and clarify coverage details.
- Maintain accurate documentation of authorization status and correspondence in the patient’s record.
- Collaborate with therapists, billing, and front desk staff to ensure services are authorized and scheduled appropriately.
- Notify patients and families of coverage limits, out-of-pocket costs, and authorization requirements.
- Keep up to date on payer policies and authorization processes for major insurance plans.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Prior experience in medical office administration, billing, or insurance verification prefered but not required.
- Strong understanding of medical insurance, authorizations, and reimbursement processes.
- Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems and Microsoft Office.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
