What are the responsibilities and job description for the Industrial Equipment Reliability Technician position at ATS - Industrial Maintenance?
A day in the life
You arrive on the floor, check the CMMS for overnight work orders, and prioritize a mix of break-fix calls and scheduled preventive maintenance. A machine flags an alarm—first you observe it in operation to pinpoint the root cause, then carefully dismantle components, inspect parts for wear, adjust control instruments, replace what’s defective, and test performance. Later, you recondition a machine tool, log your work in the CMMS, and join a quick huddle on 5S and continuous improvement wins that cut downtime and cost.
What you’ll own
- Mid to expert-level troubleshooting and preventative maintenance across electrical and mechanical systems, including testing electrical circuitry and mechanical subsystems to verify fixes.
- Root-cause diagnosis by observing equipment in operation; dismantling assemblies to access components; examining parts for imperfections; adjusting functional parts and control instruments; repairing or replacing components; and validating results.
- Reconditioning and repairing machine tools.
- Identifying and sourcing parts, supplies, and repair items to keep work moving.
- Independent execution of maintenance tasks aligned to industry standards.
- Setting up and operating machining equipment—lathe, drill press, grinder, and other metalworking tools—to fabricate or repair parts; welding as needed.
- Maintaining 5S and strong housekeeping practices across work areas.
- Driving and participating in continuous improvement efforts focused on process effectiveness, measurable results, and cost savings.
- Keeping records current and reviewing CMMS history to inform decisions and prevent repeat failures.
- Troubleshooting and analyzing control systems to resolve software, hardware, and configuration issues.
- Using predictive maintenance technologies to gather equipment performance data.
- Mentoring lower-level technicians and occasionally leading small teams; taking on advanced tasks for skill growth.
- Completing on-the-job learning and self-directed technical study to advance your career.
- Following all safety policies, rules, regulations, technical instructions, and guidelines; maintaining situational awareness and calling out unsafe behaviors or conditions.
What you bring
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One of the following: an Associate’s degree with a technical focus plus 3 years of related general-industry experience; 5 years of related general-industry experience; or successful completion of the ATS Technician Progression Program.
- Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, fluid power, and control systems, with the ability to analyze issues and execute repairs.
- Proficiency with basic and specialized hand tools.
- Willingness to travel as required.
Physical realities of the job
Expect to stand and walk frequently; use hands and fingers; reach with arms; climb, ascend/descend, or balance at heights requiring a ladder or lift; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl in confined spaces. You’ll also communicate verbally and by hearing, occasionally sit, and at times lift or move more than 50 pounds. Close and color vision are used regularly. You may encounter outside weather and electrical shock risk. Work occurs in a typically very loud factory setting with potential exposure to hazardous materials and greasy or slippery floors.
