What are the responsibilities and job description for the Commercial Sales Manager position at Atlas Connections?
Atlas Connections has partnered with a well-established commercial specialty trade contractor in Alexandria, VA on a Commercial Sales Manager search. Founded in the late 1980s, our client has built its DMV reputation on craftsmanship, a training-first culture, and a 90% repeat-and-referral client base. This is not a franchise — work is performed by an internal team of skilled tradespeople who are trained, developed, and retained by the company. The owner is hands-on, personally involved in sales, and actively building succession at the VP level.
The role:
You'll lead the sales function for the Commercial Division — a player-coach seat managing 3–4 commercial sales reps while carrying your own book of business. You'll set strategy and KPIs alongside the Division VP, train the team on estimating, bid writing, and closing, and partner closely with operations to keep crews fully utilized year-round.
The commercial portfolio is diverse and high-quality:
- Institutional — airports, hospitals, government buildings, libraries, museums
- Industrial — warehouses, distribution, manufacturing, utilities, data centers
- Property management & commercial real estate — office, retail, hotels
- Large venues — stadiums, convention centers, theaters
Trusted-by clients include major regional airports, professional sports venues, and leading DMV property management associations.
What you'll own:
- Annual sales plan, revenue forecasting, and pipeline analysis against VP-set targets
- Hiring, training, and developing the commercial sales team; setting individual and team targets
- Personal production — $2M–$5M annual book expected from the seat
- Cross-functional partnership with operations to maintain year-round crew utilization
- Sales database, weekly/monthly reporting to the Division VP
- Marketing collaboration on campaigns, target customer groups, and new geography expansion
What we're looking for:
- Hungry, resilient, self-motivated leader who takes pride in selling craftsmanship over commodity
- Prior sales management or senior IC experience in a commercial specialty trade (examples: painting, coatings, restoration, roofing, flooring, drywall, waterproofing, mechanical, electrical, or commercial construction services)
- Track record of personally selling $2M–$5M annually in commercial trade or construction services
- Experience hiring, training, and managing a sales team to quota — or strong informal team lead experience with readiness to step up
- Comfortable with labor-hour-based estimating or willing to learn the company's specific methodology
- Based in or relocating to the DMV — this is an on-site role with regular job site visits; once established, there's flexibility to work off-site a few days as it makes sense
Compensation & benefits:
- $95K–$105K base 1% commission on total sales volume
- Realistic first-year total take-home: $115K–$150K
- Full medical, dental, vision
- 401(k)
- Real upside — the owner currently leads the broader sales function, and the long-term plan is to grow this seat into a VP of Sales role (or hire directly into it for the right person)
About the company:
140 employees, growth mode, founded 1987. Internal team-driven (subcontractors used sparingly). 90% repeat and referral business. Owner is heavily involved and personally trains sales talent — meaning the right person will get high-touch development and visibility, not a corporate hierarchy to navigate.
Salary : $95,000 - $115,000
