The Service Technician is responsible for independently performing diagnostics, repairs, and
maintenance on a wide range of commercial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration
(HVACR) systems. This role requires a strong foundation of technical knowledge, field experience,
and the ability to interact professionally with customers, dispatchers, and service managers.
The Service Technician must be capable of handling routine service calls and preventive maintenance
work while assisting senior technicians with more complex tasks. This position marks the transition
from support to technician-level responsibilities. The ideal candidate must have strong HVAC and Refrigeration experience, and they must have a solid background in commercial projects.
Qualifications:
• 3–5 years of experience servicing commercial HVACR systems
• Proven ability to independently handle diagnostic and repair work
• Field experience with various commercial systems and components
• EPA 608 Universal Certification required
• OSHA 30 required
• NFPA Hot Works required
• Lift Certificate preferred
• Enrolled in or completed Massachusetts HVACR apprenticeship program, if applicable, and
ready to sit for licensing exam
• MA Refrigeration Technician License preferred
• Additional trade licenses preferred
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
• Additional certifications (e.g., manufacturer-specific) are a plus
• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities
• Working knowledge of commercial HVACR systems and controls
• Basic understanding of refrigeration cycle, electrical circuits, airflow, and gas systems
• Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and schematics
• Clear verbal and written communication skills
• Time management and organizational skills
Duties & Responsibilities:
• Independently diagnose and repair commercial HVACR systems, including:
o Rooftop units (RTUs)
o Split systems
o Boilers and heat pumps
o Air handlers, VAVs, and exhaust systems
o Refrigeration equipment (walk-ins, reach-ins, etc.)
• Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and control system faults
• Replace or repair failed components such as compressors, motors, capacitors, and control
boards
• Complete scheduled service calls, including routine maintenance and repairs
• Assist senior technicians with more advanced diagnostics, system repairs, and component
replacements
• Perform refrigerant recovery, leak detection, and pressure testing independently
• Use gauges, multimeters, temperature sensors, and other diagnostic tools
• Accurately complete work orders, service reports, and digital documentation
• Communicate clearly with dispatch, customers, and supervisors regarding job progress and
findings
• Maintain clean, organized, and stocked service vehicles and tools
• Follow company safety protocols and use proper PPE at all times
• Perform scheduled PMs on equipment to ensure reliable operation and extend system lifespan.
• Identify and report potential problems before failures occur
• Complete maintenance checklists and provide clear, detailed service reports
• Communicate findings and recommended repairs to customers professionally and clearly
• Collaborate with service coordinators/dispatch to ensure timely and efficient scheduling
• Provide technical feedback to management on equipment condition and future needs
• Maintain clean and organized service vehicle, tools, and inventory
• Accurately complete all required documentation, including work orders, time logs, and
material usage
• Follow safety protocols, PPE requirements, and OSHA/EPA compliance standards
• Support and mentor junior technicians or apprentices when needed
Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions:
• Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, bend, crouch, climb, and lift for extended periods
• Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds and use hand and power tools safely
• Required to work indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold,
humidity, rain, and confined spaces such as attics and crawl spaces
• Must have command of all five senses sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Specific vision
abilities required include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus
• Must have functional vision, hearing, and speech sufficient to conduct business face-to-face
and over the phone
• Must have full range of motion and the ability to use hands, feet, and fingers to handle tools
and equipment
• Typical workweek consists of 8 to 10-hour days, 5 days per week, with occasional weekends,
early mornings, or late evenings as needed
• Must be capable of working in high-stress situations and dealing with aggressive personalities
in a fast-paced industry
