Commercial Refrigeration Technician

Reports to: Service Manager
Location: Boston / Quincy, MA (Greater Boston & South Shore)
We are seeking an experienced Commercial Refrigeration Technician to service, maintain, and troubleshoot advanced commercial refrigeration systems throughout the Boston and Quincy area. This role focuses on transcritical and subcritical CO₂ rack systems supporting supermarkets, cold storage, and mission-critical refrigeration environments.
The ideal candidate has strong mechanical, electrical, and controls expertise, is highly safety-conscious, and understands the unique operating characteristics and pressures associated with CO₂ refrigeration systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, service, maintain, and repair CO₂ (R-744) refrigeration systems, including:
- Transcritical & subcritical CO₂ rack systems
- Parallel compression systems
- Gas coolers, flash gas bypass, and ejector-supported systems
- Walk-in coolers/freezers, reach-ins, and display cases
- Perform commissioning, startup, and system optimization of CO₂ refrigeration equipment.
- Safely work on high-pressure refrigeration systems, following proper lockout, pressure relief, and isolation procedures.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic controls, including:
- Electronic expansion valves (EEVs)
- Pressure and temperature sensors
- VFDs and rack control platforms
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and refrigeration blueprints.
- Identify system inefficiencies, refrigerant leaks, sensor failures, and control-related issues.
- Accurately document service work using mobile devices (tablet/phone).
- Participate in an on-call rotation for emergency refrigeration service.
- Maintain professional communication with customers, supervisors, and internal teams.
Required Skills & Experience
- 5 years of commercial refrigeration experience
- Hands-on experience with CO₂ (R-744) refrigeration systems strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of:
- High-pressure refrigeration safety
- Transcritical vs. subcritical operation
- Gas cooler and high-pressure valve control strategies
- Solid electrical troubleshooting skills related to refrigeration and controls
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and blueprints
- Strong problem-solving and diagnostic ability
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Comfortable multitasking in fast-paced service environments
- Proficient with smart devices (Android phone/tablet) and service software
Licenses & Certifications
- EPA Universal Certification (required)
- OSHA 10 (required)
- Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record

Pay: $38.00 - $55.00 per hour
