POSITION SUMMARY:
We are recruiting for a Utility Plant Specialist ll. The position involves the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of wastewater treatment systems, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Responsibilities include performing routine chemical and equipment adjustments, recording data, conducting preventative maintenance, and supporting general groundskeeping and facility repairs. The role also includes preparing reports, responding to emergency repairs, and maintaining accurate documentation. Candidates must be able to work independently, follow established procedures, and assist with on-call support as needed.
This full-time position is located in Hanover, VA and starts at $29.50 per hour.

- Perform other duties as assigned to support the agency’s operations.
- Efficiently performs duties as assigned and works as a team within division and company.

- Operate and maintain new sewage treatment throughout all stages (pre-treatment, primary, secondary, final).
- Maintain and monitor all equipment, including comminutor, influent tank, aeration tank, clarifier, sand filters, chlorination contact tank, sludge drying beds, sludge pumps, and dechlorinator tank.
- Perform all laboratory tests required by established guidelines.
- Make internal and external observations of plant operations on a daily basis to ensure plant operation is in accordance with established guidelines.
- Compile data and prepare reports on a monthly basis as required by State Water Control and State Health Department.
- Maintain three years of records required by the regulatory agency (daily work sheet, DMR, calibration sheet, maintenance records).
- Make reports to DEQ for water and wastewater treatment.
- Make necessary chemical and equipment adjustments as indicated by lab tests and visual observations upon discovery.
- Record daily log adjustments to facilitate monitoring follow-up in accordance with established guidelines.
- Perform preventive maintenance on all plant equipment as required.
- Conduct completion of maintenance on a daily log and check-off sheet in accordance with established guidelines.
- Conduct inventory of tools and equipment daily to ensure safe and secure use.
- Prepare and submit quarterly inventory reports in accordance with established guidelines.
- Ensure a safe and healthy work environment through daily compliance with all safety regulations and practices.
- Perform assigned groundskeeping, general maintenance, painting, carpentry, and plumbing work to journeyman standards.
- Serve as maintenance back-up in on-call staff rotation or assigned basis.
- Respond to calls for emergency repairs on behalf of DJJ Hanover VPSTC and Barrett Facilities; evaluate problems and initiate appropriate steps to resolve them.
- Comply with timekeeping requirements and work schedules; report to work and training as scheduled.
- Submit documentation timely, which may include weekly timesheets, leave requests, and other supporting documentation as required by policy.
- Seek approval from supervisor in advance for any changes to the established work schedule, including use of leave, late or early arrivals, and/or departures.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of wastewater and sewage treatment processes (pre-treatment, primary, secondary, and final stages).
- Ability to operate, maintain, and monitor treatment plant equipment (e.g., comminutor, aeration tanks, clarifiers, sand filters, chlorination systems, sludge pumps).
- Proficient in performing laboratory tests and analyzing results.
- Strong recordkeeping and reporting skills (daily logs, maintenance records, regulatory reports).
- Ability to make chemical and equipment adjustments based on lab results and observations.
- Preventive maintenance and basic repair skills (plumbing, carpentry, painting, general maintenance).
- Inventory management and equipment monitoring.
- Understanding of and adherence to safety regulations and best practices.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Respond to emergency repair needs as required.
- Flexibility to perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required; vocational training or technical coursework in wastewater treatment, environmental science, or related field preferred.
- Experience operating and maintaining wastewater or sewage treatment facilities preferred.
- Experience performing laboratory tests and analyzing results in a water/wastewater environment preferred.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures in industrial or treatment plant settings.
- Previous experience in preventive maintenance, equipment repair, or general facility maintenance is a plus.
- Experience preparing and maintaining regulatory reports for state or local agencies preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times.
- Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
- Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
