This role plays a critical part in promoting student advocacy, mental health support, and overall well-being within the program.
Scope of Work
The Counselor will provide individual and group counseling services, conduct guidance activities, support crisis management, and collaborate with staff, students, and families to ensure student success. This role requires strong communication, problem-solving, and counseling skills, along with the ability to work with at-risk youth.

The Counselor will provide individual and group counseling services, conduct guidance activities, support crisis management, and collaborate with staff, students, and families to ensure student success. This role requires strong communication, problem-solving, and counseling skills, along with the ability to work with at-risk youth.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide services to students in academic, personal/social, and career development areas
- Counsel students individually and in small group settings
- Conduct classroom guidance activities focused on life coping skills
- Assist students with conflict resolution and crisis management
- Conduct crisis assessment and determine appropriate next steps, including emergency or parent contact when needed
- Interpret student records and maintain accurate documentation
- Prepare reports, records, and other required documentation
- Refer students to appropriate personnel and community resources
- Serve as a resource for school personnel and parents
- Maintain confidential records in accordance with all guidelines, HIPAA, and program policies
- Document all contacts regarding candidates/cadets
- Participate in admissions/recruitment efforts, including ARC meetings and candidate screenings
- Conduct in-person and phone mental health interviews and assessments
- Provide in-service training to staff on adolescent development, mental health, confidentiality, and mandated reporting
- Consult with staff on student mental health needs and participate in intervention meetings
- Participate in professional development and required meetings/events
- Support cadet advocacy and student-centered mental health initiatives
- Abide by chain of command, program policies, and established schedules
- Perform additional duties as assigned
- Knowledge of human behavior and adolescent development
- Ability to assess, counsel, and provide guidance effectively
- Strong interviewing, communication, and negotiation skills
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
- Presentation and training skills
- Ability to develop and implement counseling programs
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to work with at-risk youth and support their unique needs
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Social Sciences, or a related field
- Experience as a counselor or social worker required
- Experience working with at-risk youth preferred
