Job Title: Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Designer
Location: Downers Grove, IL
Job Type: Contract (Ongoing)
We are seeking an experienced Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Designer to support ongoing projects in an industrial environment. This role will be responsible for developing, updating, and maintaining electrical and instrumentation design documentation to support engineering and project execution efforts. The ideal candidate will have strong AutoCAD experience and a background in refinery or heavy industrial settings.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and revise electrical and instrumentation drawings to support engineering and construction activities
- Create field sketches and convert them into detailed AutoCAD drawings upon engineer approval
- Perform field walkdowns to verify existing conditions and support design development
- Update and maintain existing drawings to reflect project modifications and as-built conditions
- Collaborate with engineers and project teams to ensure accuracy and completeness of design deliverables
- Ensure compliance with site safety standards and applicable design specifications
- Instrument Loop Diagrams, including:
- Terminal cabinet drawings
- DCS hardware drawings
- Field device layouts
- Instrument location plans
- Motor control schematics and control logic diagrams
- Power distribution plans and details
- Grounding and lighting plans
- Panel schedules
- Electrical heat trace isometrics
- Conduit and cable schedules
- Electrical single-line diagrams
- Area classification drawings
- P&ID updates and modifications
- Support document control activities, including filing and maintaining drawing records
- Coordinate drawing number assignments and manage document check-in/check-out processes
- Assist with third-party drawing requests as needed
- Minimum of 5 years of electrical and instrumentation design/drafting experience in a refinery or similar industrial environment
- Strong working knowledge of industrial electrical and instrumentation systems
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (2023 or newer preferred)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and specifications
- Experience performing field walkdowns in an operating facility
- Ability to work in both office and field environments
- Willingness to access operating industrial facilities and wear required PPE, including:
- Fire-resistant clothing
- Hard hat, safety glasses, and steel-toe boots
- Hearing protection as required
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs and work at elevated heights as needed
