Assistant Civil Designer
Location: Chesapeake, VA
Job Type: Long-Term Contract
We are seeking an Assistant Civil Designer to join a growing engineering and design team supporting a diverse portfolio of infrastructure, land development, and facility projects. This long-term contract opportunity offers the chance to work alongside experienced engineers and designers on projects ranging from site development and transportation infrastructure to utility systems and facility improvements.
The ideal candidate will have experience with civil design, drafting, and BIM modeling while contributing to the preparation of construction documents, design calculations, and project deliverables.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in the design and development of civil engineering projects including:
- Site development and land planning
- Roadway design
- Storm drainage systems
- Stormwater management facilities
- Water distribution and sanitary sewer systems
- Sediment and erosion control plans
- Traffic control plans
- Airport and facility-related projects
- Support project teams through various phases of planning, proposal preparation, site evaluations, analytical design, report preparation, specifications, and construction documentation.
- Prepare detailed design drawings and construction document packages using industry-standard software.
- Develop and maintain detailed BIM and drafting models, including structural and civil design elements.
- Interpret engineering sketches, markups, and design calculations to produce accurate drawings and models.
- Assist with design layouts, problem analysis, calculations, and production work on projects of varying complexity.
- Coordinate with engineers, architects, designers, and project stakeholders to identify and resolve design and BIM model conflicts.
- Apply company, client, and industry drafting and BIM standards to all project deliverables.
- Incorporate project schedules, budgets, and design criteria into project layouts and documentation.
- Organize, maintain, and manage revisions of project drawings, plot files, and project documentation.
- Assist with document control activities including transmittals, PDF packages, and shop drawing management.
- Perform additional duties as assigned while maintaining compliance with company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
One of the following is required:
- Bachelor's Degree in Drafting Technology or a related field with 2 years of relevant experience; OR
- Associate Degree with 3 years of relevant experience; OR
- 4 years of progressive detailing and design experience.
- Proficiency with Revit.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
- Basic experience with MicroStation and Microsoft Excel.
- Understanding of structural components, construction documents, and engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of civil design principles, calculations, and design systems.
- Ability to utilize discipline-specific software to support project production and deliverables.
- Understanding of BIM standards and modeling best practices.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary project team environment.
- Collaborative approach to resolving design, drafting, and coordination challenges.
