What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parish Custodian (PT) position at Archdiocese of Boston?
- The custodian will perform daily cleaning including, e.g., sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, trash removal and window washing of the churches and parish centers.
- The custodian will be required to inspect the parish buildings’ interiors and exteriors daily, perform minor maintenance on building fixtures and equipment, troubleshoot problems and keep the Finance and Operations manager apprised on a regular basis of all building maintenance repairs and developments.
- The custodian will clean restrooms weekly and spot clean daily. Will also be responsible for keeping restroom stocked with toilet paper, paper towels, and soap.
- The custodian will notify the Finance & Operations Manager when materials or supplies are needed to be ordered.
- The custodian will be available for/assist in coordinating building inspections.
- The custodian will be expected to coordinate and oversee the activities of outside vendors required for more complex maintenance tasks.
- The custodian is not responsible for the maintenance of churches, rectories and parish centers, but will be expected to coordinate with outside vendor(s) responsible for upkeep of the properties.
- The custodian will be expected to assist in moving and setting up tables and equipment, and to clean up after large events, including those that may occur outside of regularly scheduled hours.
- The custodian will periodically be required to unlock parish facilities at the beginning of the day, or close up at night.
- The custodian will be responsible for seasonal ground maintenance including snow removal and landscaping.
- This position may, at time, require availability on weekends, especially in the winter.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
- Ideal candidate will be a practicing Catholic who understands, supports and lives the mission of the Catholic faith.
- Familiarity with general cleaning techniques and safety requirements.
- Some knowledge of simple plumbing, electrical and general repair work on large facilities.
- Ability to speak English and have the ability to communicate clearly through email and/or telephone.
- Should be able to cooperate in a team atmosphere and treat all other employees with respect.
- Must have driver’s license and access to motor vehicle.
- Position requires Massachusetts CORI clearance.
- The position requires the ability to go up and down stairs and lift approximately 50 pounds safely.

St. John the Baptist and St. Thomas the Apostle Collaborative in Peabody is currently looking for a part-time Parish Custodian to join their team. The parish custodian is responsible for keeping the churches and parish centers clean, and performing small maintenance repairs to the churches, parish centers, and rectories, so that the church’s physical plant efficiently supports the ministries of the parish and presents a safe and welcoming atmosphere to parishioners and visitors. This position will be approximately 25-30 hours per week and is benefits eligible.
