The Arc of King County serves all people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (IDD) across the lifespan, from prenatal diagnosis through end-of-life care.

Our programs include:

  • Information and Family Support for individuals with IDD, their family members, and community;
  • Supported Living Services for adults living in the community; and
  • Public Policy and Civic Engagement for people who want to ensure communities and public services work for people with IDD

Position Description

The Controller serves as the organization's primary accounting officer, responsible for executing all day-to-day financial operations and producing accurate, timely financial information. This is a hands-on role encompassing the full accounting cycle—from transaction processing through financial statement preparation and board reporting. The Controller leads the annual audit process and presents financial results directly to the Board of Directors, while partnering with the fractional CFO on compliance, grants oversight, and strategic financial matters.

Essential Functions

Full-Cycle Accounting Operations

  • Execute all day-to-day accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, payroll processing, and general ledger maintenance
  • Process journal entries, reconcile bank and investment accounts, and maintain accurate subsidiary ledgers
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely completion of all reconciliations and adjustments
  • Maintain fixed asset records and calculate depreciation

Financial Reporting and Board Presentation

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit reporting standards
  • Develop and present financial reports to the Board of Directors, translating financial data into clear, actionable information for governance decisions
  • Prepare fund-level and grant-specific financial reports as required by funders and program staff
  • Produce cash flow projections and other management reports as needed

Budgeting and Financial Planning

  • Assist the CFO with the development of the annual organizational budget in collaboration with the Executive Director and program managers
  • Prepare budget-to-actual variance analyses and financial forecasts
  • Support program staff in developing and monitoring program and grant budgets

Audit Leadership and Compliance

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, leading all aspects of annual audit preparation and coordination
  • Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and draft financial statements for auditor review
  • Implement audit recommendations and maintain documentation of internal control procedures

Systems and Process Management

  • Evaluate and enhance accounting systems, workflows, and internal controls
  • Implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness of financial operations
  • Maintain organized financial records and documentation in accordance with retention policies

Physical and Other Requirements

  • Ability to maintain prolonged attention and typing in an open office environment
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • In office work schedule with potential for hybrid work with the advanced approval of supervisor.
  • Ability to pass a DSHS Criminal Background Check.

Salary/Benefits

  • This is an exempt salaried position.
  • This position is eligible for The Arc of King County’s employee benefits package which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(K), EAP, Orca card, and more.
  • Salary range $100,000 to $120,000
Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

• Minimum 6 years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on responsibility for complete accounting cycles

• Demonstrated experience preparing financial statements and managing audit processes

• Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards (ASC 958)

• Proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks and QuickBooks online preferred)

• Advanced Excel skills including financial modeling and analysis

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial audiences including board members

 

Preferred

• Experience in nonprofit accounting, particularly with grant-funded organizations

• Familiarity with federal grant compliance (2 CFR 200 Uniform Guidance)

• Experience with Single Audit requirements
