Position Title: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
Department: Nursing
Reports To: Charge Nurse (LPN/RN), Unit Manager, Director of Nursing (DON)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
At The Gardens Health & Rehab , our Certified Nursing Assistants are dedicated to providing compassionate, resident-centered care while promoting dignity, respect, independence, and quality of life. Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, the CNA assists residents with activities of daily living, observes and reports changes in condition, and helps maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for residents, families, and visitors.
Essential Job Duties
- Provide quality, compassionate care to residents in accordance with individualized care plans.
- Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, oral hygiene, toileting, and eating.
- Assist residents with transfers, ambulation, positioning, and use of mechanical lifts following facility policy.
- Respond promptly and courteously to resident call lights.
- Obtain and accurately document vital signs, weights, intake and output, and other assigned observations.
- Observe residents for changes in physical, emotional, or mental condition and immediately report concerns to the licensed nurse.
- Maintain resident rooms by making beds, changing linens, organizing personal belongings, and ensuring cleanliness and safety.
- Assist with meals, hydration, and feeding while encouraging resident independence whenever possible.
- Promote resident dignity, privacy, and rights at all times.
- Participate in restorative nursing programs and activities as directed.
- Accurately complete all required documentation in the electronic medical record before the end of each shift.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures, including proper hand hygiene and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Attend all required in-services, meetings, competency evaluations, and mandatory education.
- Work cooperatively with nurses, therapy staff, physicians, dietary, housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, administration, and other departments to ensure exceptional resident care.
- Perform other duties as assigned by nursing leadership.
Qualifications
- Current Missouri Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in good standing.
- Current CPR certification preferred or obtained within the timeframe required by facility policy.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively with residents, families, physicians, and coworkers.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrates compassion, professionalism, dependability, and a positive attitude.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, reach, and lift throughout the shift.
- Safely lift, transfer, push, or pull up to 50 pounds independently and more with assistance or mechanical equipment.
- Ability to assist residents with transfers and mobility throughout the workday.
- Ability to work 12-hour or 8-hour shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of resident rights and person-centered care.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during emergencies.
- Ability to maintain accurate documentation and follow facility policies and state and federal regulations.
Working Conditions
This position requires daily exposure to healthcare environments, including residents with acute and chronic medical conditions, infectious diseases, bodily fluids, cleaning agents, and frequent interaction with residents, families, visitors, and staff.
