Heavy Equipment Operator

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating a variety of heavy construction equipment in support of industrial, oil and gas, utility, and heavy civil construction projects. This position plays a key role in site development, excavation, grading, trenching, material handling, and infrastructure installation activities.

The Heavy Equipment Operator must possess strong equipment operating skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively with field crews to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications.

Responsibilities

• Safely operate heavy equipment including excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers, backhoes, motor graders, rollers, telehandlers, and other construction equipment.
• Perform excavation, grading, trenching, backfilling, site preparation, and material handling operations.
• Assist with pipeline installation, utility construction, foundations, structural work, and other industrial construction activities.
• Read and interpret grade stakes, site plans, blueprints, and project specifications.
• Operate equipment with precision around underground utilities, structures, existing facilities, and personnel.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip equipment inspections and complete required documentation.
• Identify and promptly report equipment issues, maintenance needs, and safety concerns.
• Perform minor preventive maintenance and routine servicing of assigned equipment.
• Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment safely and efficiently.
• Coordinate activities with laborers, pipefitters, welders, carpenters, truck drivers, and supervisors.
• Maintain production goals while ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
• Assist with general construction activities when equipment operation is not required.
• Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean and organized condition.
• Follow all company, client, OSHA, and site-specific regulations and procedures.

Qualifications

Required

• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years of heavy equipment operating experience in industrial, oil and gas, utility, pipeline, or heavy civil construction.
• Ability to safely operate multiple types of construction equipment.
• Knowledge of excavation safety practices and utility awareness.
• Ability to read site plans, grade stakes, and construction drawings.
• Strong understanding of equipment inspections and maintenance requirements.
• Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
• Ability to pass pre-employment and client-required screenings.

Preferred

• Previous experience in industrial and oil and gas construction.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
• NCCER Heavy Equipment Operator Certification.
• Competent Person Training (Excavation/Trenching).
• CDL License.
• Rigging, Signal Person, or Equipment Safety Certifications.
• GPS machine control experience.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, climb, walk, bend, kneel, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
• Ability to climb in and out of heavy equipment multiple times per day.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, FR clothing, high-visibility vest, and steel-toed boots.

Work Environment

• Industrial construction sites, oil and gas facilities, compressor stations, processing plants, pipelines, utility projects, and heavy civil construction projects.
• Exposure to heavy equipment, excavation activities, noise, dust, vibration, and varying weather conditions.
• Fast-paced environment requiring flexibility and teamwork.
• Overtime, weekends, night shifts, and extended work schedules may be required.
• Frequent out-of-town work and travel are required. Employees should expect assignments at various project locations and may be required to stay overnight or work away from home for extended periods based on project needs.
