Senior Project Manager – Heavy Civil Construction
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to lead complex heavy civil infrastructure projects throughout the Chicago metropolitan area and surrounding Midwest markets. This leadership role is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, execution, and financial performance of large-scale transportation, bridge, highway, rail, utility, and infrastructure projects from preconstruction through final completion.
The ideal candidate will possess strong operational leadership, exceptional client relationship skills, and a proven track record of successfully delivering large public and private heavy civil projects safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all phases of heavy civil construction projects including planning, procurement, execution, scheduling, budgeting, and closeout.
- Provide strategic oversight for large infrastructure projects such as highways, bridges, rail systems, transit, earthwork, underground utilities, and transportation improvements.
- Manage project financial performance including forecasting, cost controls, change management, billing, and profit/loss accountability.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with owners, public agencies, subcontractors, consultants, and project stakeholders.
- Direct and mentor project teams including Project Managers, Engineers, Superintendents, and field personnel.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, environmental standards, quality requirements, and company policies.
- Oversee project schedules and resource allocation to ensure milestones and contractual obligations are achieved.
- Lead contract negotiations, claims management, subcontract administration, and risk mitigation efforts.
- Coordinate with estimating and preconstruction teams during bid development and project pursuits.
- Drive operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives across project delivery teams.
- Participate in executive-level meetings and provide regular updates regarding project status, risks, opportunities, and financial performance.
- Support business development initiatives and contribute to the growth of regional operations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 10–15 years of heavy civil construction experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
- Proven experience managing large-scale infrastructure projects valued at $100M preferred.
- Strong background in DOT, transportation, bridge, rail, utility, and public works construction.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing multidisciplinary project teams.
- Extensive knowledge of construction methods, scheduling software, budgeting, contract administration, and project controls.
- Experience with alternative delivery methods including Design-Build and CM/GC is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of union labor environments and self-perform construction operations preferred.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with construction management software including Primavera P6, Procore, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Experience
- Illinois DOT (IDOT), CDOT, CTA, Metra, or other major public agency project experience.
- Experience delivering complex urban infrastructure projects in densely populated environments.
- Background in large joint venture or mega-project delivery environments.
- OSHA 30 certification preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus but not required.

Work Environment
This position requires a combination of office and field presence with regular visits to active construction sites throughout the Chicago area. The role may involve occasional travel based on project needs.
