Be the reason the day runs well

Appalachian Veterinary Services is looking for a Veterinary Assistant who takes pride in doing things well, showing up prepared, and being someone the team can count on. This role is essential to keeping our doctors focused on patient care and ensuring our days run smoothly for animals, clients, and staff.

Why this role matters

When this role is done well, appointments stay on track, patients are handled safely and clients feel confident in the care their animals receive. You are a key part of how exceptional medicine actually gets delivered.

What success looks like

You’ll be successful in this role when:

  • Doctors can stay focused on diagnosing and treating patients without unnecessary interruptions or tasks
  • Patients are properly prepared, safely handled, and comfortable during exams and procedures
  • Clients feel informed, respected, and supported
  • Treatments, diagnostics, and follow-ups are completed accurately and on time
  • The day runs efficiently because you take full ownership of your responsibilities

Duties & Responsibilities (include but not limited to)

  • Greet and interact with clients cheerfully
  • Communicate information clearly and neatly in both verbal and written formats
  • Accurately draw vaccines and fill medications
  • Obtain vitals and maintain accurate medical records for patients during appointments
  • Assist veterinarians during exams, treatments, and procedures
  • Prepare patients, trucks, and equipment efficiently and correctly
  • Carry out treatments, lab work, and diagnostics as directed
  • Communicate clearly with clients before, during, and after appointments
  • Maintain clean, organized workspaces, trucks and properly stocked supplies
  • Follow established protocols and speak up when something can be improved

You’ll Be a Great Fit For This Position If You:

  • Possess a high comfort and skill level with handling horses
  • Love helping people and enjoy solving problems using critical thinking
  • Get energy from working closely with a team
  • Take on your days with enthusiasm and initiative
  • Are a hands-on learner who is comfortable with change and able to bring a vision to life
  • Have intellectual curiosity when exploring issues
  • Communicate clearly and have excellent social acuity
  • Hold high standards in your work and are eager to learn from your mistakes
  • Are disciplined and detail oriented

This role may NOT be a good fit if you:

  • Prefer vague expectations or need constant direction or micromanaging
  • Are comfortable cutting corners to get through the day

  • Struggle in a fast-paced, challenging, team-oriented environment

You’ll Have an Advantage If You:

  • Have experience with equine behavior and handling difficult patients
  • Are familiar with commonly used medications for horses and cattle
  • Are an exceptional communicator and “people person”
  • Message us “I am pumped about this job!” after applying

Our Promises to You:

  • We trust you. This is not a place where you will be micromanaged. We hire smart people, show them the way, and give them ownership in what they do.
  • We challenge you. Our strategic mission places each team member in a valuable position that plays a key role. This means you will do important, stimulating and challenging work every day that you are here.
  • We offer great benefits. Team-based bonuses, fantastic health, dental, vision, and retirement investments, parental-leave, paid-time-off, team member pricing, and much more.
  • Mentorship is a priority. Our team members are never alone. We tackle challenges and questions together in the same direction, and always strive to work toward our unified goals.

We are an ambitious bunch. We have big goals. We move fast. We are making veterinary medicine better. Better for our people. Better for our clients. All so it can be better for the animals.
