The Nonsterile Compounding Pharmacy Manager is responsible for the daily oversight, quality,compliance, and operational excellence of the nonsterile compounding department. This role ensures all compounded preparations meet applicable regulatory standards while driving efficiency, staff development, and continuous improvement. The manager serves as an operational leader, supporting safe, accurate, and compliant operations.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Workflow Management
● Oversee day-to-day operations of the nonsterile compounding department
● Ensure timely, accurate, and efficient preparation and dispensing of compounded medications ● Develop and optimize workflows to improve productivity and reduce errors
● Manage inventory, purchasing, and supply levels for nonsterile compounding materials
● Coordinate production schedules based on prescription volume and demand
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
● Ensure compliance with USP <795>, USP <800> applicable state board of pharmacy regulations, and FDA guidance
● Create, maintain and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs), master formulations, and batch records
● Lead internal audits, inspections, and corrective action plans
● Prepare for and participate in regulatory inspections and third-party audits
● Oversee environmental controls, equipment maintenance, and documentation
Staff Leadership & Development
● Supervise pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and compounding support staff
● Train staff on nonsterile compounding techniques, safety practices, and documentation requirements
● Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development
● Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement
Safety & Risk Management
● Enforce proper use of PPE and hazardous drug handling procedures (as applicable)
● Investigate and document compounding deviations, errors, or complaints
● Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)
● Ensure workplace safety standards are followed at all times
Collaboration & Communication
● Collaborate with prescribers, customer service teams, and leadership to support patient needs
● Serve as a subject matter expert for nonsterile compounding practices
● Support new formulation development and process improvements
● Communicate department performance, risks, and opportunities to leadershipList the essential job duties that are specific to the position.
Qualifications
Required
● Active Pharmacist license in good standing (state-specific)
● Minimum of 3 years of compounding pharmacy experience
● Demonstrated knowledge of USP <795> and nonsterile compounding regulations
● Knowledge of hazardous nonsterile compounding requirements
● Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
● Strong project management and communication skills.
● Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize deadlines, and work cross-functionally
Preferred
Prior 1-year of supervisory or management experience
Prior experience in a nonsterile compounding pharmacy
Experience in high-volume or complex nonsterile compounding operations
Familiarity with quality management systems (QMS)
Experience leading audits or regulatory inspections
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit for extended periods of time at a desk and working on a computer
Ability to communicate effectively in person, over the phone, or via virtual meeting
Ability to maintain focus in a typical office environment with moderate noise levels
Ability to perform repetitive motions with hands and arms, such as typing.
