We are searching for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer who can translate ambitious product concepts into rugged, production-ready optical systems. You will play a central role in designing, modeling, and validating opto-mechanical assemblies that maintain exceptional performance under demanding thermal and vibration conditions. We are searching for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer who can translate ambitious product concepts into rugged, production-ready optical systems. You will play a central role in designing, modeling, and validating opto-mechanical assemblies that maintain exceptional performance under demanding thermal and vibration conditions. This is a highly collaborative position that partners closely with mechanical, electrical, reliability, test, and manufacturing teams.
What You’ll Do
- Own the opto-mechanical design process from initial concept through production release for advanced sensing hardware.
- Create robust designs capable of operating across wide thermal ranges and intense vibration environments.
- Perform detailed FEA simulations to predict structural and thermal behavior, ensuring design durability and stability.
- Develop hardware validation plans, design custom test fixtures, and lead hands-on testing to confirm optical and mechanical performance.
- Produce precise mechanical and optical component drawings using ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
- Define and analyze tolerances for high-volume manufacturing of both optical elements and mechanical components.
- Collaborate with fabrication partners to source, inspect, and qualify high-precision components.
- Partner with quality and reliability teams to ensure systems meet all required environmental and ruggedization benchmarks.
- Strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles with experience building complex optical or multi-domain systems.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD tools.
- Expertise in mechanical drafting and GD&T application.
- Experience working with optical component suppliers and external design partners.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- 5 years of experience in mechanical or opto-mechanical product development.
- Hands-on familiarity with precision metrology instruments and measurement techniques.
- Background in designing and evaluating adhesive bond joints.
- Experience developing LiDAR systems or other high-precision optical hardware.
- Exposure to high-volume manufacturing of opto-mechanical assemblies.
- Proficiency with FEA tools such as ANSYS for structural and thermal simulation.
- Introductory experience with Zemax or other optical modeling software.
- Understanding of STOP (Structural–Thermal–Optical Performance) analyses.
- Familiarity with reliability testing including thermal cycling, shock, and vibration.
- Knowledge of ISO 10110 optical drawing standards.
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field.
