What are the responsibilities and job description for the TOOLING TECHNICIAN position at Amsted Rail Company?
POSITION SUMMARY
The Tooling Technician manages the inventory of tooling components to support manufacturing in the Forging Department. The Tooling Technician will utilize hand and power tools to make and repair dies, tools, jigs, and gauges as well as maintain computer inventory. Additionally, the tooling technician will train and assist in all forging operational roles, as well as assist maintenance when required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Adhere to plant-wide safety, ergonomics and environmental requirements defined by Amsted Rail and outlined by the Amsted Rail Health & Safety program
- Clean, maintain, store, inspect, and distribute tools and equipment to assigned department(s)
- Maintain database inventory of all tooling
- Utilize blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequence of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies
- Use hoists, vices, v-blocks, or angle plates to lift, position, and secure machined parts
- Inspect finished dies for smoothness, conformity, and defects
- Use hand and power tools to cut, shape, trim, file, grind, shim, smooth and polish blanks, blocks, products as specified
- Visualize, measure and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances based on work pieces to specifications using gauges, in accordance with the departmental quality plan
- Use computers and programs to communicate, document, and track tooling movement information
- Track Tooling movement information and ensure all documents and reports are completed accurately without error
- Collaborate with Supervisors, Managers, Engineering, Maintenance or assigned department employees regularly to address problems and actively participate in corrective actions as well as assisting in times of increased workloads and to cover key employees
- Perform preventative maintenance, and housekeeping, tasks on equipment and in assigned areas
- Other duties as assigned
To be considered a candidate must be able to meet the following qualifications:
- Successfully pass a pre-employment drug & background screening
- Lift, push & pull 10 to 50 lbs.
- Wear department required, employer provided, personal protection equipment (PPE)
- Be able to regularly stand and move throughout the department and shift
- Mechanical aptitude and prior industrial/tooling experience a plus
