What are the responsibilities and job description for the Precision CNC/Manual Machinist -- Tooling & Fixtures position at Amsted Manufacturing USA?
Step into our Petersburg machine shop and take ownership of parts from print to proof. As a key member of Amsted Rail’s Machine Shop Team, you’ll translate complex specifications into precision components, set up and run both manual and CNC equipment, and fit and assemble dies, tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges that keep rail freight moving safely. Work is performed in accordance with Amsted Rail procedures and specifications.

What you’ll work on- Champion plant-wide safety, ergonomics, and environmental practices per the Amsted Rail Health & Safety program.
- Interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, CAD files, CAM files, and G- and M-code.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to plan and verify work.
- Set up, operate, monitor, and tear down manual machines.
- Set up, program, operate, monitor, and disassemble CNC machines.
- Dial in setups by adjusting tooling, offsets, coordinates, and/or programs to achieve quality results.
- Align, secure, and adjust cutting tools and workpieces for optimal performance.
- Design and build fixtures to support machining operations.
- Set and monitor machine feeds and speeds.
- Turn, mill, drill, shape, and grind parts to specification while holding tight tolerances.
- Use gauges and precision measuring instruments to confirm parts meet tolerance requirements.
- Inspect completed parts for defects and dimensional accuracy.
- Deburr and finish surfaces to specification.
- Present finished workpieces to customers and incorporate modifications as needed.
- Pitch in on additional tasks as assigned.
- Successfully pass a pre-employment drug & background screening
- Mechanical aptitude; prior industrial experience is a plus.
- Comfort with basic computer operations.
- Completion of a Machinist Apprenticeship Program or equivalent years of machinist experience.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull 10–50 lbs.
- Consistent use of employer-provided PPE as required by the department.
- Ability to stand and move throughout the department and shift.
