Position Overview

The Montessori Infant Classroom Assistant & Aftercare Guide plays a vital role in the classroom's success and the well-being of our youngest learners, ages 3 months and up. The Assistant Guide provides nurturing, attentive, and responsive care while supporting each child's cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development within a fully implemented Montessori environment.

Working closely with the Lead Guide, the Assistant Guide helps create and maintain an environment that is peaceful, beautiful, orderly, safe, and engaging. Throughout the school day, the classroom team collaborates to prepare the environment, observe the children, support their growing independence, and foster trusting relationships with each child and family.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys both caring for infants and contributing to every aspect of maintaining a high-quality Montessori environment. The role requires flexibility, teamwork, initiative, and a willingness to support the needs of the entire community.

Essential ResponsibilitiesChild Care & Classroom Support

  • Provide warm, responsive, and respectful care for infants while adhering to Montessori principles and best practices.
  • Observe and support each child's development of movement, language, independence, self-care, and social-emotional growth.
  • Assist with diapering, feeding, naps, transitions, and daily routines while preserving each child's dignity and encouraging independence whenever possible.
  • Support children during work periods, outdoor play, meals, and caregiving routines with patience, consistency, and kindness.
  • Help maintain a calm and peaceful classroom atmosphere that encourages exploration, concentration, and secure attachment.

Preparing and Maintaining the Environment

  • Prepare and maintain a clean, organized, and inviting Montessori environment throughout the day.
  • Clean, sanitize, organize, and reset the classroom daily so it is fully prepared for the following school day.
  • Replenish classroom supplies, food preparation materials, diapers, wipes, cleaning supplies, and other consumable items as needed.
  • Repair or report damaged classroom materials and equipment promptly.

This position includes a significant amount of classroom cleaning and preparation each day. Approximately 15–30 minutes at the end of the workday is dedicated to cleaning, sanitizing, organizing, and preparing the classroom environment after the children have departed.

Collaboration & School Community

  • Work collaboratively with the Lead Guide to provide consistent care and support for the classroom community.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and professional discussions regarding children's development, classroom routines, and Montessori practices.
  • Maintain positive, professional relationships with children, families, and colleagues.
  • Communicate observations and concerns respectfully and appropriately with the Lead Guide.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students and families at all times.

Flexibility & Teamwork

  • Demonstrate flexibility in supporting the needs of the school community.
  • Assist in the Toddler classroom when needed, particularly during staffing needs.
  • Understand that while the classroom begins the year serving infants, many children transition into toddlerhood throughout the school year. Candidates should be comfortable working with and lifting toddlers as needed.

Position Details: The Infant Assistant Guide role is a full time, benefited, 10-Month position.

Contracted Dates: August 24, 2026 - June 11, 2027 with opportunity for ongoing employment after successful first year depending on staffing needs

Schedule: 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday

Compensation: $16.00 to $20.00 per hour, commensurate with experience

Required Qualifications: High School Diploma and EEC Certification or eligibility are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • DEEC Teacher Certification or eligibility preferred.
  • Experience working with infants or toddlers in an early childhood setting.
  • Montessori experience is preferred but not required.
  • CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Kind, patient, nurturing, dependable, and enthusiastic.
  • Ability to remain calm in a busy, fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to learn and grow professionally within a Montessori setting.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to frequently lift and carry children up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit, kneel, bend, squat, and work comfortably on the floor throughout the day.
  • Ability to safely perform diapering, feeding, classroom cleaning, and playground supervision.
  • Ability to actively engage with infants and toddlers throughout the school day.

Pay: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour
