Veterinary Technician Job Description
The Veterinary Technician supports veterinarians in delivering high-quality medical care to patients while providing exceptional service to clients. This role requires strong technical skills, compassion for animals, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures
- Prepare patients for surgery, monitor anesthesia and recovery
- Collect and process laboratory samples (blood, urine, fecal, cytology)
- Perform diagnostic tests and accurately record results
- Administer medications and vaccines as directed
- Take and develop radiographs following safety protocols
- Maintain accurate and thorough medical records
- Educate clients on treatment plans, medications, nutrition, and preventive care
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe hospital environment
- Properly restrain animals with care and professionalism
- Assist with inventory management and equipment maintenance
- Collaborate effectively with veterinarians, technicians, and support staff
- Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technician program (preferred)
- Licensed/Registered/Certified Veterinary Technician (preferred / as required by state law) Relevant work experience will be considered
- Previous clinical experience in a veterinary setting required
- Proficient in basic computer skills and practice management software
- Strong animal handling and patient care skills
- Excellent communication and client education abilities
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
- Compassionate, dependable, and team-oriented
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques and technologies
- Ability to stand for extended periods
- Lift and carry up to 40–50 pounds with assistance as needed
- Perform repetitive tasks including bending, kneeling, and reaching
- Fast-paced veterinary hospital or clinic
- Exposure to animals, zoonotic diseases, and medical equipment
- May include evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts
