What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Associate AFS Skeels VISTA position at AmeriCorps?
We are a multi-purpose non-profit community center, providing after school tutoring, mentoring, youth group, summer youth program, adult/senior citizens activities, and daily nutritional meals for seniors sixty and older, and twice weekly for non-seniors and a general place for participants to spend quality time. The VISTA Summer Associates will collaborate with community partners to find age appropriate activities to build social, emotional self-esteem, educational activities to help negate summer learning loss. A great numer of our youth are reading below their grade level struggling with reading comprehension, low math skills, low test scores on the Ohio Mandated Tests, and have behavior problems, which is causing them out of school suspensions. Staff and volunteers collaborate with teachers weekly to help keep the students on track
Member Duties : Assist in building the capacity of the Skeels Mathews Community Center’s youth programs that focus on addressing the mental, social, and educational needs and stigmas in the local African American Community among youth. The Summer Associate will develop, implement, and evaluate effective summer youth programming and develop a plan for sustainability. Meet with Program Manager to discuss Center’s Mission and the Project goals. Meet with partners to help identify age appropriate activities such as alcohol/drug prevention, sexual abuse, suicide prevention, bullying intervention, preventive delinquent behavior, and productive lifestyle habits. Meet Education Coordinators in local schools to identify age appropriate educational activities to help negate summer learning loss. Create a list of resources needed to complete activities and secure resources.
