What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Associate - Sustainable Agriculture Fellow position at AmeriCorps?
The Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group (HCSEG) is a nonprofit organization at the Salmon Center in Belfair, WA. HCSEG deepens the connection between land, people, and salmon. This happens through restoration, education, and research. HCSEG is located on a re-purposed family farm on the tip of the Hood Canal. The campus includes 38 acres of organic produce gardens, farm animals, a classroom, and trail access to the Union River Estuary Preserve. In the rural communities of West Puget Sound, economic challenges are interconnected with environmental challenges. Because many rural economies rely on healthy ecosystems (including fisheries, agriculture, and outdoor recreation) degraded habitat, compromised food systems, and limited access to environmental education can contribute to further economic instability. By addressing these core concerns, Summer Associates are supporting AmeriCorps VISTA's poverty-alleviating mission. Member Duties : Sustainable Agriculture Fellows will assist in the management of projects on HCSEG’s sustainable demonstration farm, Farm at Water’s Edge. Farm at Water’s Edge provides free organic produce to the Hood Canal community while enhancing farmland for ecosystem health. The farm programs educate youth and adults about sustainable agriculture and the cross section of environment and human activities. Daily responsibilities will include crop production and livestock care. Fellows will facilitate community learning and engagement with farm programs such as the U-Pick garden, seed library, and P-Patch. They will lead volunteers and engage with the community through outreach events. Fellows may have opportunities to assist with garden and sustainability education through our on site summer camp program, Farm Stewards. Additionally, they may assist with riparian habitat restoration activities, including maintenance of planting sites and invasive species removals.
