American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Trauma & General Surgery Stepdown/Med-Surg unit, requiring Level 1 trauma experience and Epic proficiency for a 13-week night shift contract in West Virginia.
Details- Acute care inpatient unit specializing in trauma and general surgery, also recognized as a Comprehensive Bariatric Surgery Center
- Unit operates as both stepdown and floor, with 30 total beds (12 floor, 18 stepdown)
- Patient population includes multi-trauma, TBI, fractures, general surgery (cholecystectomies, ostomies), bariatric surgery, and complex spinal cord injuries
- Patient ratios are 1:6 for floor (med-surg) patients and 1:3 for stepdown patients
- Common drips include heparin and PCAs on the floor; insulin, Cardizem, and other non-pressors on the stepdown
- Telemetry is present on the unit; monitor techs read and run strips, but RNs must be able to validate and read strips independently
- RT is available 24/7 and the unit manages stable/chronic vent patients only
- EMR is Epic; experience is required
- 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Weekend night schedule: Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Saturday, Sunday, Monday rotation
- Every-other-weekend or 2 weekends per 4-week schedule required
- Floating to like units (floor/stepdown) is required
- 13-week contract
- Active WV RN license or compact RN license required
- Current BLS certification required
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Epic EMR experience required
- Experience with 1:6 patient ratios required
- Experience with complex wound care, drains, devices, traumatic injuries, chest tubes, respiratory support, TBIs, and complex spinal cord injuries required
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Two professional references required: one supervisor reference and one peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., charge RN)
- Driver's license and copies of certifications required for consideration
- High-acuity, fast-paced unit where nurses are expected to practice at the top of their scope
- Nurses collaborate with care management, surgical and medical services, rehabilitation, and perioperative services
- Clinical Associates (nurse aides) are available on the unit, with up to 4 when fully staffed
- A dedicated free charge nurse is budgeted 24/7, with a house supervisor also available
- Holiday coverage is integrated into the permanent staff holiday schedule as needed
- Scrub color is royal blue
- Candidates who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before applying
- Travelers who have reached one cumulative year of experience within the WVU system must also take a 2-year break before returning
- All interviews are conducted directly with a unit manager
