Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Acute Care Unit position requiring an MT or compact RN license, NIHSS certification, and at least 1 year of strong Med/Surg experience.
Details
- Acute Care Unit in a hospital setting with 40 beds across two nursing stations (20 beds per side)
- Medically stable patient population including COPD, CHF, emphysema, CAD, DM, ETOH withdrawal, dementia, failure to thrive, falls, kidney failure/dialysis, sepsis, UTIs, GI bleeds, and wound care
- Occasional surgical patients; majority of surgical cases go to the 2nd Surgical Unit
- Designated Stroke Certified Unit
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6; CNA support at 1:6-8 ratio (4-6 CNAs per shift)
- 3-4 RNs per side (6-8 RNs per shift) with 1-2 Shift Unit Supervisors per shift
- Procedures include epidural/PCA/medication management, drain/ostomy management, chest tubes, wound care, post-surgical recovery, and post-op ortho
- EMR: Meditech | IV Pump: Baxter | Medication Dispensing: Pyxis | Communication: Voalte | Video Monitoring: CareView
- Hospitalist and RT available 24/7; Health Unit Clerk on day shift (0700-1930)
- 12-hour night shifts (1930-0700), 36 hours per week
- 6-week rotational scheduling with 6 weekend shifts per 6-week cycle; night shift weekends are Friday/Saturday
- Floating may occur to the 2nd Surgical Unit (Med/Surg Combo - Surgical and Oncology) or Progressive Care Unit for medical overflow
- 1-2 holidays required over the winter; night shift covers holiday eves
Requirements
- Active MT or compact RN license required
- Minimum 1 year of strong, broad Med/Surg experience required
- Current certifications: BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Experience with epidural/PCA management, chest tubes, wound care, drains/ostomies, and post-surgical care
- Meditech EMR experience preferred
- Last 4 digits of SSN and date of birth (month and day) required for consideration
Additional Information
- Orientation includes 1 day of general orientation (with Meditech training) followed by 12 hours orienting to the Acute Care Unit, plus cross-training to the 2nd Surgical Unit during onboarding week
- Bedside shift report, whiteboard updates, and hourly rounding are standard expectations on this unit
- Shift huddles held before every shift at 0700/1900 in the Huddle Room
- RTO must be pre-approved prior to start date; weekly commitment of 3x12s is required
- Scrubs must be clean; no specific color required, and no restrictions on hair color, tattoos, or piercings
- Free parking available; shuttle service provided during winter months
- Potential for contract extension and full-time conversion
- First-time travelers with strong Med/Surg experience will be considered
