Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Float Pool position requiring 5 years of experience, comfort with multi-unit floating across varying acuity levels, and a WV or compact RN license.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting with float pool assignment across multiple units of varying acuity, including CCU (10 beds), IMC (30 beds), MS Level 7 (27 beds), MS Level 8 (48 beds), Skilled Care (33 beds), and ED (15 beds)
- Floating to ED or CCU is based on the nurse's skillset and comfort level
- Patient population includes common diagnoses such as NSTEMI, pneumonia, sepsis, diabetes, heart disease, and diverticulitis
- Patient ratios vary by unit: CCU 1:2–3, IMC 1:4–6, MS Level 7 1:5–6, MS Level 8 1:5–8, Skilled Care 1:8–10
- Nurse aides and patient care techs are available on units at ratios of 1:7–15, assisting with ADLs, vitals, bathing, toileting, feeding, repositioning, call lights, and blood sugars
- Charting system is Cerner
- 12-hour day shifts, 3 shifts per week, with self-scheduling; schedules are made 4 weeks at a time and travelers are expected to be flexible to help fill staffing gaps
- Every other weekend required
- No on-call or standby requirement
- Unit assignments are communicated via text message within 2 hours prior to shift start
Requirements
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; ACLS specifically required if working in CCU or ED
- Minimum 5 years of RN experience required
- 1 year of ICU or ED experience preferred; ideal candidate is an ICU/stepdown traveler comfortable floating to lower acuity units
- Must be comfortable managing patient ratios ranging from 1:2 to 1:10
- Proficiency with Cerner EMR
- Must be able to read, interpret, and document telemetry strips, perform measurements, and identify rhythms
- Must be able to titrate critical drips (e.g., Heparin) when assigned to CCU or ED
- Must be able to troubleshoot respiratory equipment including vents, trachs, BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow oxygen
- A copy of a valid, unexpired driver's license is required for consideration
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
Additional Information
- Charge nurses are present on each shift and may take a patient assignment as needed
- Monitor techs are available 24/7; nurses are still expected to read and interpret telemetry independently
- Respiratory therapy is assigned across multiple units and manages breathing treatments and respiratory equipment; nurses are expected to troubleshoot equipment
- Orientation consists of 1 day of general orientation and 1 day with a preceptor, limited to one unit before working independently
- May be included in holiday rotation, split between Group A and Group B
- Scrub color requirement is navy blue
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying; cumulative time worked within WVU Medicine cannot exceed one year before a 2-year break is required
- 2 references are required for consideration: 1 supervisor reference (from a permanent facility if applicable within the last 12 months) and 1 peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., Charge RN)
