American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position in Rapid City, SD, requiring a minimum of 1 year of PCU or telemetry experience and cardiac drip titration skills.
Details- 56-bed Progressive Care Unit (PCU) in a hospital setting in Rapid City, SD
- Adult patient population with diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM/DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremens
- RN patient ratio of 1:4 on the PCU/Tele unit (days and nights)
- 12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation required — every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
- Floating required in rotation with other travelers to adult inpatient units including Med-Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, ICU (based on experience), and Observation
- Epic EMR experience preferred; candidates without Epic experience may require additional approval
- Alaris infusion pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing system used on the unit
- Active RN license — South Dakota (SD) license or Compact RN license required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 1 year of PCU or telemetry RN experience required
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation skills required
- Cardiac and vasoactive drip titration experience required (including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Levophed); candidates without this experience may request manager approval
- Proficiency with IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, indwelling and straight catheter insertion/management, insulin drips (DKA and non-DKA), continuous bladder irrigation, and chest tube maintenance
- Strong verbal and written communication, thorough physical assessment skills, and sound clinical judgment required
- Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing required
- Must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible for this position
- 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
- First-time travelers are considered only if they have more than 2 years of RN experience
- Previous permanent staff at this facility must wait 1 year before returning as a travel nurse
- Unit support includes 24/7 free-floating charge nurses (2 per unit), CNA support (1:8 ratio), 24/7 phlebotomy for peripheral draws, a flex resource nurse, 24/7 respiratory therapy, 24/7 hospitalist coverage, centralized 24/7 telemetry monitoring, and a violent incident response team
- RNs are responsible for drawing blood from central lines; phlebotomy handles peripheral draws only
- Providers are contacted via paging system and secure chat
- The unit uses a team nursing model on the 6th floor (Med-Surg cohort), where RNs may be paired with an LPN — each carries their own patient load with occasional task-sharing based on scope of practice
- Orientation includes 2 days of in-class/online education followed by 2 precepted 12-hour shifts
- Holiday coverage required for every other holiday during the contracted timeframe
- RTO of up to 7 days may be approved; no RTO during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)
- Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring — 90% compliance required
- RN scrub color is navy blue
- Free parking is available at the facility
- Esmolol and other beta-blocker or antihypertensive drips are occasionally used; training provided if traveler lacks this specific experience
