American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position in Rapid City, SD, requiring a minimum of 1 year of PCU or telemetry experience and active BLS and ACLS certifications.
Details- 56-bed Progressive Care Unit within an inpatient hospital setting
- Adult patient population with a variety of diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM/DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremens
- RN patient ratio of 1:4 on PCU/Telemetry (days and nights) and 1:5 on Med/Surg (days and nights)
- 12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation required — every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
- Floating required to adult inpatient units including Med/Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, ICU (depending on experience), and Observation; travelers float in rotation with other travelers
- Epic EMR preferred; candidates without Epic experience may require additional manager approval
- Alaris infusion pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing system used on unit
- Centralized telemetry monitoring available 24/7 for telemetry reading and alarm notifications
- Active RN license — South Dakota or compact state license required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 1 year of PCU or telemetry RN experience required
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation skills required
- Proficiency in cardiac and vasoactive drip titration required (including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed, and occasional Esmolol or other beta-blockers/antihypertensives)
- Skills required: IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, indwelling and straight catheter insertion/management, insulin drips (DKA and non-DKA), continuous bladder irrigation, and chest tube maintenance
- Strong clinical judgment, thorough physical assessment skills, and effective verbal and written communication required
- Must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
- Two professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
- Orientation consists of 2 days of in-class/online education followed by two 12-hour precepted shifts
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:8 ratio), two free-floating charge nurses (24/7), 24/7 phlebotomy for peripheral draws, a flex resource nurse, respiratory therapy (24/7), and 24/7 in-house hospitalists
- Providers are contacted via paging system or secure chat
- Travelers may occasionally be asked to precept students
- Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring — 90% compliance required
- All travelers must attend huddle prior to shift start at 0625 (days) or 1825 (nights) in the 7th floor conference room
- Every other holiday minimum coverage is expected during the contracted timeframe
- RTO of up to 7 days may be approved; no RTO permitted during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)
- RN scrub color is Navy Blue
- Free parking is available on site
- First-time travelers with more than 2 years of experience will be considered
- Previous permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler
- The on-call unit uses a team nursing model on the 6th floor (Med/Surg cohort) pairing RNs with LPNs, with each clinician carrying their own patient load and occasional task-sharing within scope
