What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technical Account Manager position at American Tool and Die?
About the company
American Tool & Die is a precision manufacturing shop in Swansea, South Carolina. We do CNC machining, metal fabrication, stamping, tool and die build and repair, wire EDM, and custom machines / automation. Customers come to us with production problems, not catalog orders: a part they need made, tooling that has to be built or fixed, a process they want in production and then tightened up, or a special machine they need designed and built.
This role is for someone who can stand on a shop floor, understand what they’re looking at, and talk to the people who run the plant.
The job
Roughly half your time is existing accounts. You will manage relationships we already have, stay close to their production people, and grow the work.
The other half is new accounts. You will call on manufacturers in our territory, walk their plants, and consult on the technical problems in front of them. You are diagnosing work we can quote and build — fabrication, tooling, production parts, process improvement, special machines, automation — not running a product pitch.
You will be on the road at least two days a week. Territory is day trips, no farther than about three hours from Columbia. Overnight travel is rare, if it happens at all.
You need to be based in one of these cities:
- Columbia, SC
- Charlotte, NC
- Greenville, SC
- Charleston, SC
- Augusta, GA
What you will do
- Own a book of existing accounts. Keep the relationship strong and find more work inside those plants.
- Prospect and call on new manufacturers in the territory.
- Walk plant floors, ask the right questions, and turn a real production problem into a job the shop can quote.
- Bring opportunities back to estimating, engineering, and production, and stay with them through the quote and the job.
- Plan your own week. Two-plus days in the field, the rest following up, quoting support, and working accounts.
What you need
- A real background in tool and die, custom fabrication, or precision machining. Familiarity with how tooling functions, how it is designed and built, progressive tooling operations, and/or custom fabrication is the filter for this job. A sales-only background without that will not work here.
- You have to be personable. People have to want you in their plant.
- Comfortable making calls, showing up, and running your own calendar.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel two or more days a week.
- Live in Columbia, Charlotte, Greenville, Charleston, or Augusta.
Helpful, not required
- Time as a machinist, toolmaker, fabricator, estimator, or manufacturing engineer before moving into customer-facing work.
- Experience with SolidWorks or another drafting / CAD package is highly suggested. You will be looking at prints, talking through design, and working with our engineering and toolroom people.
- Existing relationships with plants in the Carolinas or eastern Georgia.
- Experience selling custom manufacturing, tooling, or equipment — not commodity / catalog product.
Pay and schedule
- Base salary plus commission.
- Full-time, Monday–Friday.
- Travel at least two days a week, day trips only, within about three hours of Columbia. Almost no overnights.
